Which do you prefer and why?

Cora
Laura
Elisabeth (would be known as Elsa or Elsie day to day)

Surname sounds a bit like Charlie.

Your thoughts would be appreciated - thanks!

No Elizabeth I know has ever been called Elizabeth in its entirety as its just too long.

Can vouch for this. People assume to shorten it, in the same way that people assume to shorten Madeleine or Alexandra. It's not wise to use Elizabeth if you only ever want it used in full, or want a specific shortening because she will get Liz/Lizzy

NearLifeExperience · 25/09/2017 23:20

Elizabeth/ Elisabeth by far... so many possible nn's but I love Elsie.

Laura - boring
Cora - fugly. Apple corer

weasle · 25/09/2017 23:49

All are nice names
I like Cora, I'd never have thought of it but it's really nice.
Are you English? I'd definitely spell it Elizabeth if so. I think the s is the German version. I know Elizabeths who have no nicknames and are known by full name but it's a great name because of its nicknames (and history!).
Laura is good too.
You have good name taste IMO!

rachrach2 · 26/09/2017 12:54

I know two Elizabeths (10 year old and adult) who just go by Elizabeth and no shortenings. No longer than Amelia or Olivia. I like quite a lot of the shortenings too.

TatianaLarina · 26/09/2017 13:24

They may announce their name and write it as Elizabeth but how many people actually call them by their full name?

My friends say their name is Elizabeth but no-one calls them that.

Amelia and Olivia get shortened to all the time, but they're slightly easier to say - they only have two primary consonant sounds m-l and l-v. Elizabeth has 4 - L z b th.

rachrach2 · 26/09/2017 13:46

Everyone calls those two I mentioned Elizabeth, they both correct people if they shorten it, no big deal.

DandySeaLioness · 26/09/2017 13:53

Cora is beautiful.

by the way, kora means „tree bark” in Polish

TatianaLarina · 26/09/2017 15:19

You're at school with the 10 year old are you?

Laura is the best. I've heard of a few in the 8 and unders. I would say it is classic, not dated. Think it's popular in some European countries now.

Elisabeth is the next best.

Don't like Cora at all.

greatpotential · 26/09/2017 20:24

Love Laura - it's one of the most beautiful names to say out loud and a real classic. And (geek alert!!) she's the subject of an epic Italian medieval love story www.britannica.com/biography/Laura-literary-subject

Think your shortenings of Elisabeth would stick - she's unlikely to become a Lizzie if you've established something strong like Elsa, which is a name in its own right.

Cora sounds unfriendly to me!

Elllicam · 26/09/2017 20:26

I like Laura, always reminds me of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Tameagobairanois · 26/09/2017 20:29

Elizabeth - it's got so many great nicknames too.
Laura - pretty but also a bit blah. I can't make up my mind.
Cora - ok but at the same time a bit harsh. Clara is nicer.

Phoebe001 · 01/10/2017 21:34

Elisabeth ♥️

SpikeGilesSandwich · 01/10/2017 23:40

I'm quite surprised by the reaction to Laura on here, I know two under four at the moment and I don't know that many small children tbh.

Roxx1516 · 02/10/2017 16:01

Cora is lovely ❤️ I'd deffo go for it, Laura is soo conman and Elizabeth again is extremely popular and dated x

C0untDucku1a · 03/10/2017 19:40

Yeah you just can't trust lauras Grin

HeteronormativeHaybales · 03/10/2017 21:48

Laura. Due a massive revival IMO.

BooksandSunandGandT · 03/10/2017 22:22

I think Laura's a good choice, given that you like it. It's not one I'd choose for my own children, but only because there are other names I like more. I certainly don't dislike it. I don't think it's a name many people would dislike: it sounds pretty but is classic and probably not that common amongst young children (but also not weird). And I've not known many Lauras I disliked (having worked with thousands of children, that's a BIG thing Grin). I can imagine it would also sound good with most surnames.

Elisabeth with an s is also lovely, and it's commonly spelt that way in several languages. I also like Elsa (hadn't thought of Frozen) and Elsie, but lots of people here are saying they are very common and could be seen as a bit of a fad. Not something I've noticed, but might be a regional issue.

I'm surprised that Cora is trendy. I've only known one and she is my age. When I was introduced to her by her mother a few years ago, I thought it was a very harsh sound (not helped by her mother's accent, I suppose), and Cora herself disliked her name. She lives in France now and only likes her name the way the French pronounce it, with a softer, throaty r.

MikeUniformMike · 03/10/2017 22:26

Elisabeth/Elsa

Blodplod · 03/10/2017 22:30

Elisabeth.. although my nearly 50 year old sister is an elisabeth with a very specific 's' as a spelling. Didn't really realise how unusual that was until recently!

BlackberryandNettle · 07/10/2017 22:59

I vote Laura. It's classic and not overly popular. We considered it for a DD as lovely name but dp has an ex called Laura

RoboticSealpup · 07/10/2017 23:01

I adore Elisabeth. With the s.
