(Not for a RL baby. Character name for my fiction writing).

What immediately springs to mind on hearing each of those names?

Thanks in advance. Smile

Torquil, Tarquin, Tristram - toff twat! A banker who wears burgundy chinos at the weekends and has a girlfriend called Minty or Bunty, a best friend called Giles and a bloody awful mother.

MammieBear · 23/09/2017 10:45

Tristram is my fave lovely romantic name.

HoratioNightboy · 23/09/2017 11:48

Torquil - a clan chief who lives in Easter Ross and does a lot of good locally. English accent.

Tarquin - chinless, useless but terribly well-mannered.

Tristram - a charmless go-getter, rich but always looking for more money. Kicks puppies and hits children. Single.

Strong opinions on these names!
"Kicks puppies and hits children"...the utter bastard. Sad Angry

Getting a snapshot of public perception is really helpful to me at this stage.

Thanks so much (and do add any more, anyone).

Torquil's family have always had springer spaniels.

Tarquin has cousin called Bunny and had a black lab as a child, the dog was his best friend and Tarquin used to tell him all about his crush on Torquil.

Tristram's dad left the family for his old flame Flavia. Too bad he was vice president in the family business, his wife Portia's family that is. They still cannot decide who gets custody of the family retriever.

Tristram was the name of the little blond boy of the MC parents who lived next to George and Mildred.

I don't think I'd immediately warm to any of those characters - which may of course be what you want. But they'd have to win me over with their charm - I wouldn't be predisposed to think "yup, that's the sort of down to earth chap I could relate to".

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 23/09/2017 20:44

That you're engaged in recreating old Jilly Cooper's.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 23/09/2017 20:55

Makes me think of the Boddingtons advert where the pleasant young chap had his pants on backwards. Other than that I would imagine someone sporting such a name as someone best avoided.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 23/09/2017 21:04

Enrique,

Not guilty. Thus far, none of my characters have been described as "ravishing", twice per page. (Jilly Cooper Basic Rule no1, surely?). Smile

That's the one! Grin

Tristram reminds me of Stardust by Neil Gaiman - not a bad namesake at all, it's one of my favourite books!

Fekko · 24/09/2017 19:30

1920s and 1930s?

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 24/09/2017 19:57

Torquill is either a rough teenager or a stable boy in medieval era.
Tarquin is a stuck up prince who needs his head chopping off.
Tristram is Tristan spelt incorrectly and Tristan is a chavvy kid from London

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 24/09/2017 20:26

"Tristram is Tristan spelt incorrectly..."

Interesting. Whilst it's true Tristram came way after Tristan, as the name's been used separately since the 12th century, should it still be referred to as an incorrect spelling?!

Continued thanks for everyone's views. You're all stars, and influencing my plotting of character development massively.

What about Tonsil? 😂

auntym · 24/09/2017 23:37

Wanker is what comes to mind.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 24/09/2017 23:42

I went to school with a Torquil (irrelevant).

All very "obvious" for names of an upper class (I assume?) character. See also Quentin and Crispin...

Buntysoven · 24/09/2017 23:46

Torquil ... snivelling blond child with a perpetual cold and mother who thinks she's posher than she is.
Tarquin... very posh but embarrassed about his name. Bit of a drip but harmless enough.
Tristram...big beefy rugby playing chap who went to public school. Long curly hair and a good laugh.
