I often see people looking for unusual names, so I’ve made up a list of girls’ names that were used 50 times or fewer in England & Wales last year. Not all of them are to my taste, but I thought it was interesting.

I expect my son's name will be on the boy's list

JoJoSM2 · 22/09/2017 15:57

A lot of them are really pretty!

Thirtyrock39 · 22/09/2017 15:59

A lot of those names were hugely popular when I was at school there were countless Claires, janes and Georgina's. All lovely names
Bridget is really retro isn't it ? Though you'd think Bridget Jones might have brought it back into fashion

DollyLlama · 22/09/2017 16:03

I'm pregnant with a boy right now, but was going to call the baby Ramona if he was a girl.

The name I've chosen is quite common so a bit gutted now waits for boys list

muttmad · 22/09/2017 16:05

My DD's names on there, I love it, but she's just started reception and is upset she can't have a colourful water bottle with her name on it like everyone else has in her class.
(Sold in the local super market with the most popular names printed in bright foam on them)
Apart from that though she loves her name Smile

TheDodgyShoesOfDrFoster · 22/09/2017 16:06

Allegra
Althea
Aster
Audra

= All Amazing. Love them.

ElspethTascioni · 22/09/2017 16:08

That isn't the full list of those used less than 50 times though, or DD's name would be there (used 28 times last year)

ABCFamily · 22/09/2017 16:21

Smoliver - I really like Ailsa and Paloma from your list.

Elspeth - No, it isn't. There are absolutely loads (& loads!) of names with under 50 births, so I just picked a few.

Wow. I knew Claire wasn't as popular as it used to be but I'm still surprised it's quite so low.

I'm keen to see a revival of Winifred, nn Freddy.

RaspberryIce · 22/09/2017 17:20

Dd is 13 and on the list and there is one other in her year and three further up the school. There is also a girl in her class with one of the names.

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/09/2017 17:40

What a refreshing list of names.

pipilangstrumpf · 22/09/2017 17:54

Raspberry, just think of how many girls there are then with top 20 names!

MumBod · 22/09/2017 18:55

Marianne is gorgeous.

Rudedog · 22/09/2017 18:58

When I was pregnant there was a website which if you put a name in it told you how many babies were called that, how many the year before and the percentage change

I wish I could find it again - I want to know how popular DDs name is!

Buglife · 22/09/2017 19:06

My name is there! It's always been a really rare one though. It's not strange or out there or Shakespearean or ancient sounding... just rare. I love it.

PlatformNineAndThreeQuarters · 22/09/2017 20:01

Not really surprised Oriana isn't more popular since the cruise liner was named that

Threeandabit · 22/09/2017 20:31

RudeDog - I am fairly sure this is the website you mean

liquidrevolution · 22/09/2017 20:33

Anouk

My DDs friend is one. Smile

Rudedog · 22/09/2017 20:37

@Threeandabit awesome ta!

LentilBaby · 22/09/2017 20:39

OP when will you be doing the boys names list? I'm due in 5 days, please hurry! Wink

Fridgedooropen · 22/09/2017 20:41

LentilBaby she's done it! Look under Baby Names.

MotherFromCatan · 22/09/2017 20:42

My daughter was one of 33 girls with her name born last year, I really like that she has an uncommon name. (not on your list though, Artemis)

Kellyturnbull · 22/09/2017 20:44

Threeandabit this page is only for England and Wales
Do you perhaps know is they have a statistics page for Scotland like this one?
:)

Threeandabit · 22/09/2017 20:56

I think they have only made it for England and Wales, unfortunately Kellyturnbull.

This might help you though. www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/names/babies-first-names

LentilBaby · 22/09/2017 21:22

Fridge door open Oh yes! Thank you Smile
