Not pg and not in need of boys' names. But am I alone in thinking that Derek is z lovely classic elegant name and well over due a revival? It's the same sort of vintage as Arthur/ Ernest/ Archie/ Oscar which are all super popular, but I've never met one under the age of 70.

Where are all the baby Dereks?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ee I don't know about that, I feel the same way about Derek as I do about Colin. And Bruce. And possibly Brian

Misspilly88 · 18/09/2017 23:10

It's hideous

Faez · 18/09/2017 23:10

Trotter

cuirderussie · 18/09/2017 23:18

This guy

Derek
redfairy · 18/09/2017 23:26

Awful name. Reminds me of the drummer in Bay City Rollers.

TheVanguardSix · 18/09/2017 23:30

Dell!
Every Derek I know is truly awesome, I swear.

NearLifeExperience · 19/09/2017 00:16

Truly awful. When I was growing up in the 70's/ 80's Derek was your dad's dodgy mate or your friend's uncle.

I like Dirk, though!

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/09/2017 06:27

Forget about Derek where are all the baby Trevor's and Nigel's. Colin's Grin

intimeandspace · 19/09/2017 06:35

God, noooooo.
On a par with "Neil the baby" on Gavin and Stacey.

PandorasXbox · 19/09/2017 07:22

Same bracket as Kevin and Nigel. Fucking awful!

user327854831 · 19/09/2017 07:30

It does have a kind of male-stalker/flasher ring to it. If that's the image you want for your baby then go for it!

Seriously though, why not? If you like it go for it - what does it matter what a bunch of strangers on MN think of it? There are some lovely Dereks out there.

stellarfox · 19/09/2017 07:56

I think it's not quite it's time to come back. I know one elderly man with this name.

EdithWeston · 19/09/2017 08:07

I remember the phrase 'a bit of a Derek' which wasn't complimentary. I think it might have originated with Corrie

No idea how widespread it was, not how well remembered now. It's enough to put me off.

NickMyLipple · 19/09/2017 08:12

My cat is Dennis. Here he is. Yes pretty cute. His best friend is a little black dot called Mildred. Cuddling is their favourite thing.

In One Tree Hill, there was a stalker named Derek. He was referred to as "Psycho Derek", as though that was his name.

ShowOfHands · 19/09/2017 08:28

I know a 3yo Derek. Derek Junior to give him his full name.

PuppyMonkey · 19/09/2017 08:31

God no. Just no.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 19/09/2017 09:23

Doubters: don't diss Derek. Grin

Derek
Lemondrop99 · 19/09/2017 11:14

Nah, not yet. For me, Derek sits with the likes of Ray, Colin, Roger, Keith, Roy and Alan. My parents' generation and all feel a bit dated/naff to me.

The current trend for old names is from my grandparents' generation.

If Derek has a come back, it'll be when our kids start having children.

I wondered why I'd got the idea from, now I remember!

^where

TheNaze73 · 19/09/2017 11:23

I think it's ironically brilliant & genuinely think it'd be great.

Would make a real change from the countless Harry's, Alfie's, Oliver's & Jack's that will be the Kevin's, Darren's & Gary's of 2030

ibentmywookie · 19/09/2017 11:40

It conjures up visions of late 70s suburban hell for me, living in a cul de sac, playing golf with Roy and Trevor, washing the Ford Granada on a Sunday, G Plan furniture, pampas grass, and shag pile carpets.

midsomermurderess · 19/09/2017 12:51

Is Dirk a form of Derek? If it is I would prefer to go with that.
