Max or Arthur?

We are after a name that is 'classic' and will suit an 8 and 80 year old. That he won't get teased about and will suit him to be a labourer or surgeon! Which would you go for? Any other options you can suggest?

Arthur

Max

Dislike Arthur

EssentialHummus · 18/09/2017 03:29

Both. I know a really cute little Max, and a really cute little Arthur .

SadieContrary · 18/09/2017 04:21

I prefer Max but Arthur very popular too. As is Harry, Archie, George, Charles (Charlie) etc - all of which suit young and old

Happydays21 · 18/09/2017 05:01

Max. Arthur is too old man.

Mum2OneTeen · 18/09/2017 05:44

Max

stellarfox · 18/09/2017 07:45

I really like both but I feel like Max should be a nickname for one of the longer Max- names

mooneypie · 18/09/2017 07:51

I didn't know about the Max/dog's name thing (although thinking about it I do know a dog called Max!) I was thinking Max was the safer option, although it's probably not. I just can't picture a teenager called Arthur for some weird reason, plus it's a difficult name to shorten if he doesn't like it. Thank you for all the opinions :)

I think Max is fine as a standalone but admittedly am biased.

I thought the longer versions were poncey.

grufallosfriend · 18/09/2017 07:58

Arthur

Max sounds doglike and not like a nickname imo.

MammieBear · 18/09/2017 08:05

I think Max will work at any age Arthur is super popular at the moment and is the favourite for Kate and Will apparently.

sonlypuppyfat · 18/09/2017 08:15

I went to school with an Arthur and his life was made a misery, mind you this was in the days when every boy was called Gary

CoolCarrie · 18/09/2017 08:18

Sorry, but eastenders springs to mind with both of those names. There are much nicer traditional names out there.

Shashuka · 18/09/2017 08:21

Love them both. I'd go for Arthur though. I know two teenage Arthurs and they are lovely, polite, fun young men. The name suits them perfectly.

lostfrequencies · 18/09/2017 08:31

I think they're both lovely names. Wait til he's here and then decide (that's if he's not been born already!)

Lobsterquadrille2 · 18/09/2017 08:40

Both lovely names. Max matches James and Thomas in terms of ending with the "s" sound, so maybe go with Arthur to break it up a bit?

holdthewine · 18/09/2017 08:44

As you will know, as you have children already, there are lots of Arthurs and Maxes at the moment. If you don't mind that, both are solid names though personally I'd call him Maximilian or Maxwell and use Max as a NN as you have given your other sons the full names not the diminutive. I know 5 Arthurs and 4 Maxes under 5 plus two Maxes in their 30s.

holdthewine · 18/09/2017 08:46

One of the baby Arthurs I know is called Art as in Art Garfunkel.

DiegoMadonna · 18/09/2017 12:19

Max. Not a fan of Arthur at all.

Jooni · 18/09/2017 18:22

Max. I like Arthur but Max is lovely and simple/down-to-earth. Also love Art!

PinkFlamingo888 · 18/09/2017 19:11

Arthur 😊

MrsBartlettforthewin · 18/09/2017 19:17

Arthur. Great name. As a teacher I don't have many come through with this name but enough that it isn't weird, iyswim. I currently have a max who is a nightmare
