Names that don't sound stupid with our last name??

NameyMcnamechangey · 17/09/2017 02:29

Right I've changed name for this because it's not a common last name and don't want to linked etc etc.

Our last name is Starr.

Help us to make a shortlist! Just had 20 week scan, not finding out the sex.

DH likes Florence and Atticus
I like Harriet and Thomas, but it's so hard to find a name we both like that doesn't sound stupid with our last name!

tellmyfriendsiminlove · 17/09/2017 02:45

Atticus starr is appalling. Like a prep school bully.

Okay I think a traditional name would work well. Florence Starr is lovely but think of it shortened- Flo Starr, sounds like a menstruation aid.

Harriett and Thomas are fab!

NameyMcnamechangey · 17/09/2017 03:49

Haha!! Yes! I despise his names! He will not win! I've vetoed them both as they are hideous

OP posts:
Reppin · 17/09/2017 04:25

His names are cool! Yours are very overused and boring. Sorry.

Elllicam · 17/09/2017 04:32

I like Florence and Thomas.

AlphaStation · 17/09/2017 04:35

Why not both? Thomas Atticus Starr, called Thomas?

Read here for Atticus, I didn't know this name before now. People here seem to like it (otherwise they wouldn't have commented I suppose):

www.behindthename.com/name/atticus/comments
Here is one comment out of the list: "I think Atticus is a very strong name, and very masculine-sounding. In Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" Atticus was a very intelligent lawyer with good moral principles." And another writer says "I love this name. My wife is expecting and if it's a boy we're almost certain to use it. I think it's a bold choice, but I like it's meaning; ethical. It's of Roman heritage (I'm Italian) and Atticus Finch is a strong, moral character. So that's a plus."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titus_Pomponius_Atticus

And if a girl Harriet Florence Starr, obviously.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 17/09/2017 05:08

Ringo. Dare you.

Joking aside, "Starr" may be unusual, but it's not in a bad way.
I rather like it!

Sorry to your DH, but the "S" sounds between "Atticus"/ "Florence" and "Starr" get a bit swallowed up unless you enunciate like a Radio 4 newsreader!

Short, no-frills, strong names work well (e.g. Thomas...Oh! Ignore my previous point, then)/Tom, Jack, Leo, Joseph/Joe, William/Will etc.).

or

Alexander Starr...(Abbrev. for NN, Alex/Al Starr?).

Dylan Starr

Zachary Starr...(Zach/Zack Starr?)...perfect name for a future musician/ writer/ artist/ architect Smile

Girls' names:

Harriet Starr...(Harri Starr?)...sounds good together.

So do short and strong Faith, Fern/Fearne, Phoebe, Niamh, May/Maeve. (Zara Starr? Lara Starr? Can't decide if too many "ah" sounds!).

Or

Alexandra/Alexandria Starr...(Alex/Xandra Starr?)

Emily/ Emmeline Starr...(Emmy/ Em Starr?)

Elizabeth Starr...(Eliza/ Lizzie/ Ellie/ Beth/ Libby Starr?)...lots of abbrev. NN options there.

Raphaela (or Rafaela) Starr flows beautifully. (Abbrev. NN of Raphy/ Raffy is cute as well).

Good luck, OP.

ChocolateCrunch · 17/09/2017 07:15

James, Jacob, Benjamin, Cameron, Alexander

Katie, Olivia, Georgia, Charlotte, Annabel

grufallosfriend · 17/09/2017 08:42

I wouldn't choose a first name ending in s. Otherwise the S sound runs into the surname. So I'd avoid Thomas or James or Atticus.

How about
Theodore Starr
Quentin Starr
Reuben Starr

Isabel Starr
Harriett Starr
Emilia Starr

Poppyfields21 · 17/09/2017 08:49

I agree with previous posters that a traditional, 'normal' name for the first name nicely offsets the unusual (but nice!) surname you have. You can then let DH go crazy on whatever middle name he wants without the issue of Flo Starr the menstruation aid, which made me laugh

P.S. Lovely surname OP.

daisypond · 17/09/2017 15:16

I think your surname is really nice and striking, in a good way. Just don't call the baby Freddie. "Freddie Starr ate my hamster" as a headline has never gone away.

Composteleana · 17/09/2017 15:31

Matilda Starr
Charlotte Starr
Emily Starr
Rosalie Starr
Jessica Starr
Francesca Starr
Naomi Starr
Karina Starr
Evangeline Starr
Violet Starr (? I like it but not sure if colour + Starr would seem odd to others)

Finlay Starr
Christopher Starr (nn Kitt?)
Blake Starr
Henry Starr
Elliott Starr
Rowan Starr
Gabriel Starr

NameyMcnamechangey · 17/09/2017 16:34

@Composteleana I like your suggestions:) you've also picked out the names of my DHs three brothers and sister Grin

OP posts:
NameyMcnamechangey · 17/09/2017 16:34

Thank you for your suggestions ❤️❤️

OP posts:
MammieBear · 17/09/2017 16:53

Hayley would be good like the comet ☄. If you don't like the connection I wouldn't worry about you favourite names as it only a surname and they don't sound stupid at all, put a middle name in to break it up if you really think it does.

bridgetreilly · 17/09/2017 18:15

Reading through the suggestions, I really like the -anna ones:
Rosanna Starr
Anna Starr

Could also have:
Roanna Starr
Joanna Starr
Marianna Starr
Diana Starr
Susanna Starr

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/09/2017 18:52

As someone upthread said, no s sound at the end.

NapQueen · 17/09/2017 18:54

Penelope Starr
Megan Starr
Sophia Starr

Jacob starr
Leonard Starr
Dexter starr

fionadal · 17/09/2017 21:01

Starr goes with lots of names IMO-you're lucky!

Like your choices, but how about some extras:
Olivia Starr
Mary Starr
Helena Starr

Barnaby Starr
Edward Starr
Patrick Starr

Beeziekn33ze · 17/09/2017 21:39

Amelie Starr
Emily Starr
Xanthe Starr
Eleni Starr
Rosalie Starr

Floellabella · 17/09/2017 22:31

Great last name. But I would avoid names ending in S or an S sound (e.g. Florence) because they run into your surname. We have the same issue but in a way it helps cut down the options.
