A first name to go with Susannah

We're pretty settled on a boys' name but still thinking about a girls'. We've decided to have Susannah as a middle name to honour a family member so looking for a name that pairs with it. Toying with Beatrice, largely because we're both longtime Much Ado fans, but just somehow not completely sold yet.

In general I prefer classic or timeless names and not much into "creative" spellings or trendy names. Also, like Granny Weatherwax, I tend to feel that you shouldn't give yourself a name you can't scrub the floor (or muck out the chickens, or drill a hole, or whatever) in. Irish and Scots heritage on both sides though so names from that pool are up for grabs.

Any ideas?

One of my other possibilities is Roisin. So:

Roisin Susannah
Beatrice Susannah
Or...?

Evelyn Smile

AfunaMbatata · 15/09/2017 16:26

I agree, Evelyn is a lovely name and would go fabulously with that middle name.

Unfortunately Evelyn is out because it's already been snaffled by a family member :)

I like Miriam and Audrey. I think Harriet also has a neglected charm. We considered Alexandra, which had the added benefit that she could go by "Alex" on her CV, but it's out as too similar and too many Alexes in our social circle already.

I agree, Susannah is a beautiful name.
Have you considered using if for a first name ?

AfunaMbatata · 15/09/2017 17:36

That's a damn shame Sad

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/09/2017 17:36

Sorry OP, meant to add, I ❤️ Roisin.

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/09/2017 17:48

Roisin is beautiful. I only know one. It's a gorgeous name

Definitely Roisin Susannah

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 15/09/2017 18:03

@Sugarpiehoneyeye using it as a first name would cause a bit of confusion with the family member it honours :)

Definitely a preference for Roisin Susannah though. I'd almost forgotten about Roisin - I was at school with one years ago and loved the name since. She'll have to spell it for the rest of her life, but eh, I sometimes have to spell my name, and it's dead common.

Roisin Susannah does flow better than Beatrice Susannah. Both are nice though.

Borttagen · 15/09/2017 19:05

If you're going for the Irish version it's Róisín and the fadas are important as they affect pronunciation - this is pronounced 'row' like the sport, 'sheen' like Charlie.

Have to say I am not a massive fan of Roisin. It looks so pretty written down but the times I've come across it in real life, it ends up as Rosh-eeeeeeen which really grates... and Rosh for short - not at all like the Irish pronunciation I assume.

Susannah is so much prettier, as are lots of the other suggestions.

Josephine Susannah would give you Posey and Josie as nicknames. I like that.

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 16/09/2017 10:51

fizzy that is the Irish pronunciation!

Josephine's already snagged within the family too.

Also, Susannah is staying as the middle name I'm afraid, both to avoid confusion with the other family member and because I still like other names more. But I'd completely forgotten about Roisin when I started this thread so that really helped!

OTOH my sibling's taste in names is getting a lot of compliments here, so maybe I should ask him...

Oh sorry I thought that it had been explained upthread that the Irish prn. is 'row' as in rowing rather than the 'roh' sound that ends up as 'Rosh'.

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 16/09/2017 11:45

Maybe it's my accent, but those two sound the same to me! Id shorten to "Ro" if I were shortening but I've never felt the need to shorten two-syllable names anyway.

But I grew up in Ireland and yes it's always been "ROW-sheen".

My cousin has a Zoe Susannah, which I think sounds lovely.
