Alastair or Ambrose?

DH prefers Alastair, I like it too but worry about the alternative spellings, since we often have to spell out our surname. Is Ambrose too old-fashioned? Too rice-puddingy? Suggestions for alternatives welcome!

LilaoftheGreenwood · 13/09/2017 13:48

dustarr73 · 13/09/2017 13:54

No not Ambose, he be asked how is his pudding is hanging😂😂.

Tilapia · 13/09/2017 13:55

Alastair - I love this name

CrizzleMyShizzle · 13/09/2017 14:00

Alastair. Yes there are a host of different ways to spell it which might be annoying but Ambrose is seriously bad. As in SERIOUSLY.

helly29 · 13/09/2017 14:05

I'm biased, love Alastair spelling but went for 'Ali' spelling as our surname is also often heard wrong. Still occasionally gets spelt wrong e.g Allister, but at least always pronounced right!
Like Ambrose too, but would never have got that past dh!

stopbeingadramallama · 13/09/2017 14:06

Ambrose, haha😀

Bearhair · 13/09/2017 14:17

Alastair is lovely, as are several other spellings of it. Much prefer that over Ambrose, personally (and yes, it does make me think of rice pudding Blush).

CakeRattleandRoll · 13/09/2017 14:31

Love Alastair. (Although my favourite spelling is Alasdair.)

villainousbroodmare · 13/09/2017 14:51

Agree with pp Lila that the above list of names are very much of a piece. Disagree in that they are my most disliked type of name. Sort of flabby and indoorsy, like an order of elderly balding cloistered monks.

LadyWithLapdog · 13/09/2017 14:56

What's the rice pudding connection?

TillyTheTiger · 13/09/2017 15:02

@helly29 do you have to spell it out for people often, or is Alistair the default spelling?
I wanted a name with no variations but we're struggling to find anything to fit our criteria (not trendy, not biblical, not overly popular, no alternative pronunciations or spellings). It doesn't help that I love traditional names (William, Samuel, James) and DH prefers more modern names (Trent, Heath, Ethan).

@LadyWithLapdog there's a brand of custard/rice pudding in the UK called Ambrosia.

Yeh I was suspecting I might be a lone voice on this. Sorry OP Grin

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/09/2017 16:37

Alistair. Ambrose is awful its like a hybrid of Amber and Rose.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 13/09/2017 17:00

Ambrosia rice pudding.
Andrew is nice.

TillyTheTiger · 13/09/2017 17:03

Lila I suspected that my love for Ambrose might not be universally shared so it was a nice surprise that you liked it too (even if you are the only one!)

Oly5 · 13/09/2017 17:07

Alastair is nicer by far

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 13/09/2017 18:32

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 13/09/2017 18:32

Ambrose*

Mrsknackered · 13/09/2017 18:33

Please Ambrose, would make my day to hear of a baby Ambrose.

Not a fan of Alistair, but probably in the minority as have heard of a few new ones recently.

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/09/2017 18:34

I really like both but prefer Alistair

sweetbabboo · 13/09/2017 18:35

I love Ambrose! Have found out it's a popular name with my ancestors, earliest one I can find dates from 1732 and there are subsequent ones right up to the 1930s.

Floellabella · 13/09/2017 18:51

Love Alastair with that spelling

Ambrose is sweet but does make me think of rice pudding Hmm
