Bonkers?

I met a 3 year old Jonquil known as Jonnie at the docs today and I'm sort of falling in love with it. Love both long and short. Nancy and Jonnie. Cute or naff? Last name 2 syllables starting with J

If you want to call him Jonnie, I'd go for Jonathan.

I personally wouldn't call a child the slang name for a condom though....

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/09/2017 23:51

If the surname is Johnson, then no.

If not, it's quite pretty for a little girl.

Topseyt · 09/09/2017 02:01

Naff for me.

Pemba · 09/09/2017 06:03

I vaguely heard of it but thought it was a girls' name. Isn't a jonquil a type of flower?

Bubblesoup · 09/09/2017 07:30

I really don't like it, sorry. Although I love Jonnie/Jonny.

nodogsinthebedroom · 09/09/2017 07:51

Are you naming a girl or a boy?

Personally I think Jonquil for a boy sounds similar to Tarquin (i.e posh in a bad way). For a girl it's OK I guess, but being known by a male nn might get a bit annoying?

An alternative for a girl would be Joni which is very cute imo.

OliviaStabler · 09/09/2017 07:54

Wouldn't want to call my child after a flower that looks like a daffodil.

Liadain · 09/09/2017 09:44

It sounds like one of the stereotypical uber posh names. Tarquin, Ptolemy, Jonquil...

No from me.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 09/09/2017 09:45

I know a Jonquil, her nick name is Jolly !

BikeRunSki · 09/09/2017 09:48

Jonquille is the French word for Daffodil. Girl's name.

SuperBeagle · 09/09/2017 10:39

I can't imagine too many men appreciating being called Jonquil. Grin

Also, it just makes me think of daffodils, so to me it'd be no different from naming your child Daffodil.

demirose87 · 09/09/2017 10:41

It's awful, sorry. I do like Jonny though.

RJnomore1 · 09/09/2017 10:42

I like it.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 09/09/2017 12:33

"Bonkers" has a certain ring to it, OP, but I fear it may cause grief in the playground.

Ah.

Am afraid Jonquil doesn't appeal to me, be it pronounced as JON-quill or ZHON-key in French version (or is that the "Jonquille" spelling?).

Joanie/ Joni/ Johnnie/ Johan/ Jonas etc. are all fine, though.

Bigbustedbabe · 09/09/2017 20:33

I know a female Jonquil in her 60's.
She takes great pride when she introduces herself to anyone in explaining that she is named after a flower & that she bets they don't know anyone else with that name.she is a very strong person.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 09/09/2017 21:00

I knew a little Jonquil, though I suppose he'd be a teenager now. I always thought the name was a little odd for a boy.

Hulder · 09/09/2017 21:28

Am assuming you are naming a girl?

Buntysoven · 10/09/2017 01:01

Sorry I thought it was obvious that it was for a girl 😂Don't knoe what we're having yet but boy's name set in stone. Promise it's not Beryl!

BackforGood · 10/09/2017 01:19

Ah - well now you have learned something - that if you call your dd 'Jonnie', then a lot will presume your child is a boy. Now, that might or might not bother you, but it's worth throwing into the equation.

mathanxiety · 10/09/2017 05:17

I think it's lovely, and Jonnie is a nice abbreviation.

FizzyGreenWater · 10/09/2017 14:40

Love it for a girl. Prefer Jolly to Johnnie, but both quite good.

Buntysoven · 11/09/2017 00:29

I love it more each day.. sadly DH said "Don't be bloody silly" so that's that! Thanks for the input.

No to Jonnie for a girl! How? Why? What? Confused

SuperBeagle · 11/09/2017 10:38

I always wanted to be called John when I was younger. Grin Inspired by Julie Andrews in Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Jonnie is a fine nickname for a girl, as names like Billie, Alex and Sam are. I'm just not a fan of Jonquil. Josephine nn Jonnie could work...
