Tess...short for?

Picking out girls names and other half wants Theresa (which I hate), possible compromise on Tess, but is this a proper name, or more of a nickname kind of name. Also when I hear Tess I do tend to say of the durbevilles in my head...

Thoughts?

I really like it and the only Tess I've ever known it was her full name. I think it's "proper" :)

daisypond · 07/09/2017 16:52

Tess of the d'Urbervilles springs to mind, too. But I think it's OK as a stand-alone name. Tessa?

MadisonAvenue · 07/09/2017 16:56

Tess is lovely on it's own.

I know a Theresa who is sometimes shortened to Tess, really don't like Theresa (that goes for the name and the person Wink).

grannytomine · 07/09/2017 16:56

Two ton Tessie O'Shea. Sorry showing my age. Makes me think of a fat lady.

grasspigeons · 07/09/2017 16:59

I think it's a lovely name.
I know a Tessa who is always called Tess.

I would go with Tessa, which is definitely a name in it's own right! I would assume Tess was short for Tessa. Both are lovely.

helly29 · 07/09/2017 17:01

I've only ever used Tess as short for Tessa (which is obviously also a short form of Theresa/Teresa). I love it but can't use it - a friend is Tessa although 'officially' Teresa. She's never known as Teresa though, so don't see why you couldn't use Tess/Tessa as the full name.

harrietm87 · 07/09/2017 17:07

I know a tessie short for Anastasia (Greek family), though Anastasia is pronounced a bit like Anastesssia in their accent.

Apparently also sometimes used as short for Esther?

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2017 17:09

Tess on its own is perfect.

Theresa is very old fashioned and Tessa sounds very 70s to me.

Twoevils · 07/09/2017 17:09

I know an Esther shortened to Tess

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/09/2017 17:45

Theresa

BikeRunSki · 07/09/2017 17:46

Contessa

Tessnamechanged · 07/09/2017 17:55

I'm a Tess which is short for Tessa.
I love my name Grin
The only other Tess I've ever met was a Tessa too

WhyOhWine · 07/09/2017 17:57

I know a Tessera shortened to Tess, but not sure if it is a made up name to have a longer version!

Piggywaspushed · 07/09/2017 18:00

I've taught two, both just called Tess. They were both quite clever and had great hair, if that helps.

deaddeadgood · 07/09/2017 20:07

Isn't it short for Elizabeth. Like Tess Daly? Think Tess is from her middle name and her first name is actually Helen

deaddeadgood · 07/09/2017 20:07

Love it by the way. Was on our shortlist

early30smum · 07/09/2017 20:08

Tess by itself is lovely. Or use Tessa which is also lovely!

Tessa

JWrecks · 07/09/2017 20:48

Contessa or Theresa/Teresa I would assume, but Tess is a name in itself.

Calphurnia · 07/09/2017 20:49

Tristessa

Ikabod · 07/09/2017 20:50

Tessa. My mum was a Theresa, everyone called her Tessa. My DD is named Tessa after her and we call her Tess.

Applesandpears56 · 07/09/2017 20:51

TrimYourWick · 07/09/2017 20:56
