Is it Nel/Nell/Nelle? My spell check likes Nell. I'd really like to find the correct way.

Thanks :)

If I heard the name I would assume Nell. It's a lovely name.

DramaAlpaca · 04/09/2017 23:36

Nell is the usual spelling of the girls' name. I reckon your spell check is correct.

Candlemiss · 04/09/2017 23:36

Nell is the correct spelling.

WyfOfBathe · 04/09/2017 23:37

I've only seen Nell before

MassiveOrange · 04/09/2017 23:40

Wonderful, thank you. Behind the name is usually very accurate and also says Nell is the correct spelling.

Do you like it?

I have a great aunt nell, she's in her 80's now and I didn't know until a few years back that her real name is Helen!

Out2pasture · 04/09/2017 23:42

i would assume Nel is short for Nelson?

Nell. I think Nel might be the Welsh form? I like Nelle too though.

Glumglowworm · 05/09/2017 07:11

I know a Nel but only ever see Nell on here

BikeRunSki · 05/09/2017 07:17

Nell is the standard spelling.

It's a name of it's own now, but originates as a pet form of Helen and Eleanor, from when "Mine" denoted a family member "Mine Eleanor" corrupted to "My Nell...".

It's lovely anyway.

bridgetreilly · 05/09/2017 20:33

Nell is lovely. Traditionally a nickname for Helen or Eleanor, but I think it's fine on its own.

DramaAlpaca · 05/09/2017 20:35

Nell is really lovely - as long as it doesn't get changed to Nellie, which is not lovely at all.

PattyPenguin · 05/09/2017 21:26

N was often added to names beginning with a vowel when forming nicknames.

Oliver > Noll
Ellen / Eleanor > Nell
Ann > Nan (and thence the double diminutive Nancy)
Edward > Ned

And Nel is indeed the Welsh form (because ll is a different sound in Welsh, as in the beginning of all those place names starting with Llan-).
