Not for a potential child, I'm afraid... but for a sociology lesson. I want to do a lesson on our assumptions regarding gender. So need some modern day unisex names.

So far I've got...

Sam
Lesley /ie
Robyn /in

Umm and that's it. I need 30 names!

TIA.

Hillary
Beverley

Although, they are both far more commonly used for women these days, so they might cause unconscious bias anyway.

No such thing as a unisex name. Except Frances/is. There are boy's names which girls sometimes have.

Dawned...

Just a starter to an introductory lesson on gender. I want to give every student a unisex name and a job. For example "Sam is a nurse" and ask each students to each write a small biography about that person...

They won't know everyone else has got a unisex name, so then they'll read out the bios, and it'll be the introduction to gender assumptions that they make about people... why did they assume Sam was female for example.. looking at the gender stereotyping we make of others.

Then onto the main bulk of the lesson. Going to also look at some of the examples on No more boys and girls and so on...

But I want them to see that they do it too!

Oh and one of them will be Shirley (Crabtree) a famous sportstar!

Now if anyone can think of any other famous examples... that would be great!

So far I've got

Shirley Crabtree (sports person)
Marilyn Manson (singer)

Two or three more examples would be fab!

Evelyn Waugh
George Elliot

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2017 23:30

Evelyn used to be a male name.

George Elliott is a male name.

Fandabidozy · 02/09/2017 23:36

Stevie Nicks (musician)
Cameron Diaz (actress)
Robin Williams (actor)
Mandy Patinkin (actor)
Alice Cooper (singer)

BikeRunSki · 02/09/2017 23:37

Kelly Jones (man)- lead singer of the Sterophonics - maybe a bit out of date.

Marion Morrison - better known as John Wayne

BikeRunSki · 02/09/2017 23:38

But Alice Cooper is a deliberately controversial stage name. Alice is not a unisex name.

BikeRunSki · 02/09/2017 23:42

Jo Wylie/Joe Root

BikeRunSki · 02/09/2017 23:43

Stevie Nicks
