Alicia - how would you pronounce?

I like this name, but pronounced Alissia (like Alicia Vikander), not Aleesha (like Alicia Keys). How would you think to pronounce it? Wondering if pronounciation confusion would be an issue in the UK? I think 'aleesha' is the American way?

I would say it as Alissia (I love the name-Alicia was my favourite character in Malory Towers!)

I would say the other spellings eg, Alesha/Aleisha/Aleesha would be pronounced the other way.

Actually looking at it written down, I don't think the spelling Alissia looks at all bad written down. If that's the way you want it prounouced, do that to save confusion.

Allis-see-yah

Glumglowworm · 30/08/2017 17:51

A-liss-ia

BlueberryPuffin · 30/08/2017 18:14

A-lee-shuh. Like Alicia Keys.

FionaMcBride · 31/08/2017 11:29

It's Al-iss-e-er here. The Alesha pronunciation is a completely different name to me. Not keen on Alesha at all, but Alicia is lovely.

Eolian · 31/08/2017 11:31

A-liss-ia. I really don't like the Aleesha pronunciation and would probably avoid the name for that reason.

Sophronia · 31/08/2017 12:12

A-liss-ee-a is how I always thought it was pronounced.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/08/2017 12:36

Al-ee-sha.
If you want Al-iss-ia then spell it
Alissia to avoid confusion

AmysTiara · 31/08/2017 12:40

Aleesha.

I have a friend who spells it Alyssia to avoid confusion.

17caterpillars1mouse · 31/08/2017 12:48

A-liss-ee-ah

Best pronuniciation in my eyes

I've only ever known one though and she pronounced it Aleesha

BoredOnMatLeave · 31/08/2017 12:57

I would say Al-ee-sha but I don't like it at all and Alissia is much better. But every Alicia I have met as been Al-ee-sha

EllenJanethickerknickers · 31/08/2017 13:01

Either way. I know an Alicia pronounced Al iss ee ah and an Al ee shah. You will get people pronouncing it the alternative way, I'm afraid.

emilybrontescorset · 31/08/2017 13:10

I know both.
I prefer the Al iss ee ah pronounciation.
Ive seen it spelt in many different formats too.

fluffiphlox · 31/08/2017 13:13

I think traditionally this would have been pronounced Alissia. Quite classy.
Nowadays the pronunciation seems to be Aleesha. Which doesn't sound as classy to me. But then I'm a raging snob about names.

Roomba · 31/08/2017 13:25

My childhood friend was an Alicia - pronounced A-liss-ia. It drove her nuts when people said A-lees-ia or A-leesh-a, but most people got it right .

It was a far less common name back in the 70s/80s though, in my experience anyway. It does seem that the Aleesha pronunciation is a lot more common these days, probably due to there being several celebrities who pronounce it this way (it's the Spanish way originally I think?). I'd always ask first before saying, because of knowing my friend as a child and how much she hated it when people got it wrong.

Changeschangechangeagain · 31/08/2017 13:25

At one school I was in, we had two girls in the same class, both with this name and different pronunciations.

A lith thea with a bit of a lisp seemed to be the posher version.

There were other Aleisha's in the school but all spelt differently again.

A-liss.ee-ah
