Hello, curious to here people's thoughts about the name Lourdes for a girl. Do you like it or is it too fancy sounding and how would you pronounce it? i'm worried it will be said lots of ways, i'm not even sure myself which is the correct way to say it! I just love the way it looks Smile

Madonna's daughter. I wouldn't.

SnickersWasAHorse · 28/08/2017 00:48

I believe, but I am very willing to be corrected, that it is like Lords but with the or like your, tour, four. Or Lor-dez.

Either way, no, not unless you are a devout Catholic and then still no.

Hattiehop · 28/08/2017 00:49

oh i see thank you for letting me know!

No.

PaganGoddessBrigid · 28/08/2017 01:04

What about Lois?

OuchLegoHurts · 28/08/2017 01:07

It's a highly Catholic name, only really used used in Hispanic cultures as a name and pronounced 'Lordez'. I am Catholic and believe in the miracle at Lourdes but still wouldn't dream of calling my child that...

squoosh · 28/08/2017 01:08

I'd assume you were either very, very Catholic, or a Madonna fan. Are you aware of the town and its significance as a place of pilgrimage?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2017 01:26

Heck, no

TheCraicDealer · 28/08/2017 01:29

Aside from Madonna's DD the only other Lourdes I know of is one of Alex Gerard's little girls.

Why can't I dump this info for something that might be useful?

Applesandpears56 · 28/08/2017 03:55

No

sycamore54321 · 28/08/2017 04:02

Very Catholic and then place itself is like a holy Las Vegas, tack central. If you like the sound, Lourda is fairly well known in Ireland for a certain generation. Or then there's obviously Laura, Lauren, Lorraine, etc which all sound similar. A straight-up Baby Lourdes is going to guarantee questions every single time she meets someone new about Madonna, religion or both.

AlphaStation · 28/08/2017 04:26

Terrible name in a world where people get fatter and fatter, as Lourdes in my mind associates to the French lourd which means heavy, massive, dense, onerous, weighty, leaden (according to my dictionary). Could pave the way for a little girl to be nicknamed for a person who is fat, like Fatty or Ms Piggy etc. My dictionary explains: "Qui, par sa corpulence, offre un aspect massif et se déplace avec pesanteur."

SuperBeagle · 28/08/2017 06:22
  1. Madonna
  2. Lorde

It's a no from me.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 28/08/2017 10:52

Sorry, it's a no, from me too.

If you're naming her after the town then the pronunciation is Loord. I've no idea how humans with the name pronounce it, but if people say Lor-dez or Lords, then that to me sounds kind of ignorant.

My advice would be to avoid; there are many similar pretty names which are easier to use.

Hattiehop · 28/08/2017 16:07

Not catholic, i do know about the place Lourdes but didn't realise a lot of things about this name so thank you all. I do think it sounds pretty but will avoid.

I know a Spanish lady called Lourdes and hence think of it as a fairly normal Spanish name. She pronounces it as does everyone else as Loourdesz. So I think of it as a continental name associated with a nice person who is also clever.

squoosh · 28/08/2017 16:16

'I've no idea how humans with the name pronounce it, but if people say Lor-dez or Lords, then that to me sounds kind of ignorant.'

Spanish.

NC4now · 28/08/2017 16:17

I wouldn't if you aren't Catholic. Actually, I wouldn't if you are. It's OTT for a RC child too.

Hoist with your own petard.

Mightybanhammer · 28/08/2017 18:31

You didn't realise the Catholic connection. Nor the French translation? Sheesh!
Call it something more mainstream.

OhTheRoses · 28/08/2017 19:12

Or even her. Less nice to call a baby it than Lourdes.

HoratioNightboy · 28/08/2017 22:28

Hoist with your own petard.

Hardly. The OP asked for thoughts and that's what I'd think.

buttercup54321 · 28/08/2017 22:31
