Am I spelling this correctly?

So after getting over the fact that dh has put an absolute veto on my favourite girl's name, I think we've finally agreed on a compromise.

Anyway I know a person who's name pronunciation and spelling don't match up (spelled Lewis pronounced Louis) & think of his parents going through life not realising this so I just want to check I'm not making the same mistake!

If we were to call the baby Edie it is pronounced 'Ee-Dee' isn't it? I'm 99% sure I'm right but have a niggling doubt in the back of my head that I'd be accidentally calling her 'Eh-dee '.

Yes I would say Ee-dee. Cute name.

WhyNotDuckie · 26/08/2017 22:08

Yep, ee-dee. Pretty name! Smile

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 26/08/2017 22:09

I would pronounce that as Ee-dee (ie the first syllable the same as Edith). I think most people would.

Bobbiepin · 26/08/2017 22:10

For curiosity, what was the name that DH said no to?

early30smum · 26/08/2017 22:17

Yep. One of my favourite names! Good choice OP!

GwendolynMary · 26/08/2017 22:19

I'd say ee-dee. Short for Edith. Fantastic name, all the best muses were Edies.

Ameliablue · 26/08/2017 22:22

I'd pronounce it Eedee as have come across it as shortened versions of Edith or Eden.

BertrandRussell · 26/08/2017 22:22

Eee-dee.

But Edith on the birth certificate? Please?

carrotcakecupcake · 26/08/2017 22:26

I really wanted Edith (nn ee-dee) for DD but DH vetoed. Lovely name!

SuperBeagle · 26/08/2017 22:33

Yes, Edie is ee-dee. Traditionally short for Edith. Edie Sedgwick was a famous bearer. Smile

SleepingStandingUp · 26/08/2017 22:46

Why can't people name their children what they want rather than having to pick a longer version they don't want then nn it back 👇

OutComeTheWolves · 27/08/2017 10:29

Thank you everyone - I just needed to check. I think we have a winner!

I would pronounce Ed as Ed and Edie as Ed-ie. short for Edward.

ladybirdsaredotty · 28/08/2017 13:04

It's definitely Ee-dee not Eddie!

Mrsknackered · 28/08/2017 13:07

Defo EE-Dee. I know 3, one is an Edith, two are just Edie. (Youngest is 18, eldest 22)

Pemba · 28/08/2017 15:11

Yes, it's ee-dee. Unfortunately you will probably get a few thickos trying to say edd-ee, like the boys' name. Just put them straight and they'll remember.

Or maybe you won't, as Edie becomes more popular and well-known.

grufallosfriend · 28/08/2017 16:04

If I read the name phonetically in English, it would be Ed-ee. Like Edwin or Ed. But I would try to learn Smile

Amee1992x · 28/08/2017 16:07

Lovely name!

Changingoftheguard · 28/08/2017 16:11

We named our new dd Edie, very loosely inspired by Edie Sedgwick.

Great choice Smile

grandOlejukeofYork · 28/08/2017 16:12

I would pronounce Ed as Ed and Edie as Ed-ie. short for Edward

Well you would be wrong, since that would be Eddie, with two d's.

BikeRunSki · 28/08/2017 16:12

The abbreviation of Edward is spelt Eddie. (Eh-dee).

Edie is Eee-dee.

Pemba · 28/08/2017 16:23

Sorry grufallo I honestly didn't notice your post before I made mine, so wasn't calling you personally a thicko!

But I think there is some kind of rule that if you want the first syllable pronounced with a short vowel sound, you have to have the consonant following it to be double. That's why you have Eddie - double 'd' means a short 'e' - eh-dee. Edie - single 'd' so ee-dee.

Like the word 'ladies' has one consonant - d - at the end of the first syllable so you say 'lay-deez'. If you want the plural of lad you have to put 2 ds in the middle 'laddies' then you get the short 'a' sound.

I am probably not explaining very well, and there are probably exceptions.

grufallosfriend · 28/08/2017 17:17

It's ok Pemba Smile. I didn't read your post as a response to mine at all. Thanks for explaining the pronunciation - I genuinely didn't know (and Will from now on)
