Do these names sound stupid with our surname?

We're starting to compile a girls' name list and coming up against potential problems with our surname, which is W@terhouse.

Sone of our favourites are Flora, Iona and Wren but we're worried they sound a bit silly:

Flora W@terhouse = too horticultural?
Iona W@terhouse = sounds like "I own a..."
Wren W@terhouse = DH thinks this sounds like a birdbath?!

What do you think? Are we overthinking?
(@ is so this doesn't come up on google if we do go with one of these!)

Florence Waterhouse sounds good, as per a pp, and obviously similar to flora Smile

Papyrus · 25/08/2017 16:27

If you Iike Flora, then what about Clara? Similar sound.

I do like Wren, if you're not sure, it could be a middle name?

Papyrus · 25/08/2017 16:29

Or Isla, staying with the Scottish island theme?

SurnameSchmurname · 25/08/2017 17:00

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Weirdly I'm not wildly keen on Florence, despite the similarity. It's a bit soft and lispy for me I think, plus we know quite a few. Juliet, Clara, Martha, Iris all nice but not for me. Anwen I do like! I also love Mabli from another thread but we are not remotely Welsh - problem?

AyUp "don't stress Mrs W" - ha, love it, thanks. I should get this tattooed somewhere!

I don't think you need to have Welsh connections to use a Welsh name, if you love it go for it. I like Emma Waterhouse or Rosemary Waterhouse - any good?

SurnameSchmurname · 25/08/2017 17:14

Pelvic I've always really liked Emma but it's a bit, I dunno... ordinary. I know lots too (though no little ones, thinking about it)

I really think a simple, classic name would be best.

Emma
Rebecca
Eleanor
Etc.

Sorry. I know the quirky, cool ones sound good on little girls. But your surname is brilliantly distinguished and I just think it sounds really funny with lots of those names. Like Rianna would too. Just doesn't go. My surname ends in 'el' as did all the boys names I loved: Gabriel, Joel, Daniel etc.!!

NapQueen · 25/08/2017 17:35

Jemima Waterhouse
Penny Waterhouse
Lydia Waterhouse

MerryMarigold · 25/08/2017 17:40

Penny/ Penelope is wonderful!

PandorasXbox · 25/08/2017 17:50

Harriet
Annabel
Thea
Cecily
Anna
Eleanor

All flow nicely?

Dontrocktheboat · 25/08/2017 17:55

We were not able to use Iona either due to noun surname.

I did like Ione, which is similar (pronounced Ionie it is apparently a Greek sea nymph or a violet flower). That would work better with your surname.

I don't think Wren sounds bad with your surname but might eventually think of the bird bath, also not really keen on name - what if child is not tiny and dainty, might not suit!

Poppyfields21 · 25/08/2017 17:59

I own a W@terhouse 😂 Hadn't occurred to me. I love Ophelia W@terhouse

early30smum · 25/08/2017 18:11

I think Flora is fine, the other two, no.

What about Emmeline or Emilia if you like Emma?

vitalite · 25/08/2017 18:19

I'm afraid I agree that none of those 3 names go with that surname. If I had to choose one it would be flora

SumAndSubstance · 25/08/2017 18:23

I think Flora is fine too. I mean, it does sound a bit horticultural, but there's nothing wrong with that (and Flora is rather horticultural all by itself!). I don't think Wren Waterhouse flows that well even ignoring the birdbath connotations. Iona Waterhouse is, yes, obviously absurd.

youarenotkiddingme · 25/08/2017 18:29

I live the name Matilda and think it sounds lovely with your surname.

Matilda W@terhouse

Was going to suggest Florence but see you aren't keen!

Ivy (lovely but same as flora)
Grace
Evie
Ida (maybe too close to I've a!)
Amilie

daisypond · 25/08/2017 18:30

I think Flora is fine as well. I can see the problem with Iona, so maybe not that one. Wren is awkward with the surname, and I really dislike it as a name, too, so that doesn't help.

youarenotkiddingme · 25/08/2017 18:30

Or if you like Emma how about Ella?

AltogetherAndrews · 25/08/2017 19:02

I like Emma Waterhouse, it has a Jane Austen vibe to it.

Twistandshout77 · 25/08/2017 19:13

an e name would go really well -
Esme
Erin /Elin
Elowen
Elda

Twistandshout77 · 25/08/2017 19:14

There was Emma woodhouse in Jane Austen that's probably why Smile

Chaffinch4 · 25/08/2017 19:47

I think Flora is fine, but I probably wouldn't use Iona or Wren.

mistermagpie · 25/08/2017 19:56

I always think Wren is one of those names that looks nice written down but doesn't sound like a name when you say it out loud. Which is irrelevant really but fwiw I don't think it goes with your surname.

I can't decide if I love or hate Flora Waterhouse, part of me actually quite likes it! The flora I know has a sister called Maisie, not sure if you like that?

Shame about Iona, it was top of my list for girls names (I have two boys!).

Backhometothenorth · 25/08/2017 20:10

Fab surname! You will find something that works perfectly but I agree that these three names aren't the ones. Wren plus surname also sounds a bit like 'rainwater' house to me.

Harriet sounds lovely as previously suggested. Do you like Miriam?

Batteriesallgone · 25/08/2017 20:15

I would really struggle to pronounce Wren Waterhouse. I realise if she has a speech impediment you can get a speech therapist etc but personally I would stay away from anything tongue-twister esque just in case. Although I know that probably sounds a silly thing to worry about to people who aren't affected by one.
