Name ending in D and surname starting with a D - a problem?

I'm 36 weeks so it's about time DH and I narrowed down our name lists. We don't have a huge amount of overlap at the moment, but one we do both like, if we have a boy, is Edward. The problem is, our surname starts with a D. When we realised this, DH went off the name a bit. He thinks people will either run the sounds together, or over-pronounce them - like the announcer on Blind Date used to do, where it always sounded like he was saying 'blind-duh-date'.

DH's solution is to use Edwin instead. But that's a bit... out there for me. I'm not sure it's worth going for something a lot more unusual because of how some people might pronounce Edward D-. I've never met an Edwin, would you consider it weird?

Hadn't stopped David Davis' success despite a complete lack of talent!

Seriously though, I think Edward D- is fine

lenaleave · 25/08/2017 12:24

Edward is a very nice name. I also really really like Edgar.

Chaffinch4 · 25/08/2017 12:44

Edward Davies
Edward Drake
Edward Downs

They all sounds do absolutely fine to me. I do like Edwin and Edgar as well.

I think it's fine.

Also he could well be known as Ed, especially to friends, so Edward, Edwin, Edgar, may still produce the Ed D....effect,
.

I'd stick with Edward, it's the nicest name of them all.

Think you're fine with D.

We have a few names in our family ending in S and our surname begins with S. It's not a problem in real life, but is a Mumsnet no-no!

early30smum · 25/08/2017 13:18

It's fine and I much prefer Edward to Edwin!

n0ne · 25/08/2017 13:40

I disagree with your DH but do genuinely prefer Edwin to Edward. Not weird at all.

Jooni · 25/08/2017 13:52

It's fine, and Edward is lovely. Edwin is too though and I don't find it weird at all!

donkey86 · 25/08/2017 14:18

Thanks all, seems the general opinion is it's ok. Now to think about girls' names - much harder!

I prefer Edwin, more unusual than the very popular Edward

bridgetreilly · 25/08/2017 21:14

Never did David Duchovny any harm!

PaganGoddessBrigid · 26/08/2017 02:10

The D at the end of David runs more smoothly in to another D than the D at the end of Edward does though.

Edward Douglas. Edward Davis. Those are hard to say. I vote that it doesn't sound great. Or more that it's hard to say.
