I think I can guess which will win but...

Clemency or Marianne

Be as harsh as you like. TIA

What about just Clemmie? (Assuming you were going to use that NN).

Or, what about a totally different first name, middle name Clementine, but always known as Clementine? People do that.

Did you like the suggestion of Marianna or Marina?

LineysRun · 20/08/2017 20:01

I do love both, btw.

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/08/2017 20:59

I really like Clemency and would consider it if I had another dd. I also really like Clemence but not Clementine.

Marianne is cute as is Mariana

Jooni · 20/08/2017 21:33

I like both. Clemency feels more in-line with current trends but Marianne feels a bit stronger and more solid, even though it's perhaps a bit "dated" rather than sweetly old-fashioned.

What about Constance, Corinne/Corinna, Meredith or Merrily "Merry"?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 20/08/2017 21:42

I love Clemency, but if you love Clementine then you should use it. It doesn't matter if it rhymes with your surname. She'll probably go by Clemmie anyway.

MammieBear · 21/08/2017 14:49

Clemency is a nice name but the meaning that's associated in court puts me off how about Clementine or Clemencia? Marianne is lovely with good nicknames, good meaning and lovely characters in literature.

rainbowterrier · 22/08/2017 11:41

Marianne, definitely. Not my style but I find Clemency very jarring to the ear. It makes me imagine phlegm. 😯

I love clemency

SomeOtherFuckers · 22/08/2017 12:39

Alternatively you could use Clemence ( with an accent over last E) or Clemencia?

Clembarrass · 22/08/2017 13:36

How are you pronouncing Clementine? It can be pronounced either "ine" or "een" at the end, so you could just go with the non-rhyming version.

I had a great book as a child called Marianne Dreams, so I'm very drawn to that. A pretty name and not heard much.

silkybear · 22/08/2017 15:10

Marianne because my DH hated it so I never got to use it for DD!

vichill · 22/08/2017 15:17

Marianne. The real Marianne behind the classic Leonard Cohen song sounds very enigmatic and mysterious.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 22/08/2017 15:21

Marianne!

Pemba · 22/08/2017 16:04

Both lovely gorgeous names. Marianne sounds sophisticatedly European and makes me think of Marianne Faithfull as well as Jane Austen's Marianne Dashwood.

Clemency, whilst very pretty, might cause problems with the meaning though, as pps suggest. I read an interview with the writer Susan Hill once (author of 'The Woman in Black), one of her daughters is Clemency. Apparently the daughter was a volunteer in an association that writes comforting letters to prisoners in the US, including those on Death Row. You can guess where this is going .... the people in charge of the association had to ask Clemency not to use her real name to sign the letters, in case a condemned prisoner mistakenly thought they had a reprieve from their death sentence, when they saw the letter was signed 'Clemency'.

So I'd pick Marianne!

TonicAndTonic · 22/08/2017 17:23

Marianne is really lovely.

Personally I think Clemence is a much nicer variant of Clemency

Threeandabit · 22/08/2017 18:36

Marianne is nicest. I also like Mariska.

HelloFreedom · 22/08/2017 19:43

Marianne is looking more likely. Clemency/Clementine just seem too polarising. I will have to work on letting go! Last baby you see...no more opportunities to revisit beloved names that were let go.

Clemency is just way too much an actual word for me to like it as a name I'm afraid. It's meaning just slaps you in the face before you can even attach it to a person I think. Marianne is nice but not stand-out. Would hate for her to be called Marie or Anne for short. I love Clementine!
