Naming child after my brother

Hi I'm new on here and expecting my first child in December. I've been reading a lot of different threads and I love the honest advice there is.

We've found out we're having a little boy and I'm really stuck for a name. Girls names seem so much easier lol. There's is a few we both like but so far nothing has really felt "right" until I woke up today with the name Micah in my head. I love names with an "ee" sound on the end so I could call him mikey when he is little.

The reason for my post is that my brothers name is Michael. I'm very close to my brother but he doesn't live by me so it wouldn't be too confusing. It would also be lovely to honour my brother that way as well but mostly I just like the same. Do you think it's strange though to have such a similar/almost the same name as a living relative?

I'm just wondering what others think as I'm a bit unsure. My other half thinks it's fine 😊

I think it's a lovely idea, especially if you're close to your brother. Might be nice to check it with him though before announcing it to everyone?

I think it's ok, as long as your brother thinks it's ok.

You.probably ought to ask your brother if you're interested in other people's views.

How do you pronounce that though? Like "my car"?

Awandinmypocket · 17/08/2017 20:14

I think it's a lovely idea and a wonderful name. My daughter is named after her great, great grandmother (living) and her grandmother (no longer with us) and to us it adds to its sentiment. I agree with checking with him first but I'm sure he will love it :)

Thanks for the replys I will message him to see if he is comfortable with it. It's pronounced mike-a if that makes sense lol

I think that's a lovely idea.

I think it's fine and Micah is a lovely name. I personally wouldn't nn it though as I don't like Mikey

Sounds like a nice idea OP. I know someone who has three brothers and three sons. Two of her sons are named after two of her brothers and one son has a different name entirely. Talk about a snub!
