What do you think?

Baby will not be born in August.
No idea of sex yet. Just thinking of names we both like.

Someone asked me if it's weird as baby won't be born in August, but then I think it would be weird if baby was.

Like, calling a baby January if they're born in January etc. I wouldn't want to do that, but we both like the name August!

It's not for me. But I do like the name 'October' and 'January' (and obviously June and May are established names).

If someone introduced me to their baby, August, I'd probably have a flicker of "oh that's unusual" and then it'd just be their name. IDK if I'd expect the baby to be a boy or girl though...

To me it's no different to Autumn, Summer, Winter names.. I like it, it would suit both genders too :)

Dixiestamp · 17/08/2017 13:25

I guess Augusta and Augustus would be more 'standard', but I think August sounds nicer than either of those.

Kazzawazza69 · 17/08/2017 13:26

I quite like it but I don't think I'd use it unless baby was born in August. Having said that it did make me think of Augustus Gloop.

Bananamama1213 · 17/08/2017 13:34

It would be for a boy if we used it.
I like it from Once Upon a Time.

I hadn't thought of Augustus Gloop haha! Hopefully people wouldn't think the name was actually Augustus.

My great grandfather was called Augustus. We considered it as a serious choice. I don't think it matters about when the baby is born. It's a good strong name.

MammieBear · 17/08/2017 14:38

If I heard it I'd think baby was born in August unless you change it to Augustus and Augusta which are both strong royal names.

Dustbunny1900 · 17/08/2017 14:44

I love month/days of the week names! Seems a bit odd if your child wasn't born in that month/season/day but to each their own
It's lovely

ilivebythesea · 17/08/2017 15:03

I like it.

August Darnell is Kid Creole's real name, I think. No idea if he was born in August though!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 17/08/2017 15:21

I like it, but only really for someone born in August.

I would also think it's better for a boy.

Jooni · 17/08/2017 17:08

LOVE August! Definitely a boy's name to me.

I don't think with any of these names it matters when baby is born. If anything it's a bit too twee if they actually are born in the month in question.

Imnotatypicalsausage · 17/08/2017 20:11

Like it

Sophronia · 17/08/2017 20:29

Love it for a boy

SumAndSubstance · 17/08/2017 21:53

I don't think it matters if he is born in August because it isn't really to do with the month, it's a form of the name Augustus (from which of course the name of the month comes...). I think of it though in its German form where I think it is more common and is pronounced something like 'Ow-goost'. I like it.

Someone I know has just called their baby August and they call him Augie for short. I think he was born end of July. I like it a lot - easy to spell and pronounce, but there won't be another child in his class with the name (I live in the NE).

eviloops · 17/08/2017 22:16

There is a text called Wonder by RJ Palacio, which is due to come out a a film in Autumn; the main character is called August - they call him Auggie for short.

He has severe deformities and the book including health concerns, which is widely used in upper KS2 primary, although well acclaimed, is a bit of a traumatic tale (with a happy ending). I'd be concerned that your little Auggie will always be associated with the book as it destined to become a hit once the movie comes out. While there's nothing wrong with deformities or health concerns, I just know how cruel some young children can be with name calling!

FartnissEverbeans · 17/08/2017 22:26

I read Wonder with a year 7 class and could hardly finish some bits! It's heartbreaking!

I like the name August, and funnily enough I particularly like it for a girl. However, I don't think Augie is a very nice nickname. Gus is quite cool.

Avoid Augustus - I think it's awesome but I taught a child with this name and he was one of the only children I've ever met who was embarrassed by his name. The others were a boy named Archibald and another whose middle name was Xerxes.
