Hebrew names with meaning

OhWifey · 11/08/2017 08:41

We are expecting a girl. We like Hebrew names with meaning as we've been through infertility and are Christians. So far we have these three as front runners:

Josefina (Josie) God has added
Aviela (nn unsure) God is my father
Elizabeth (Libby or Beth) Consecrated to God

What do people prefer? Any other ideas? We like long names which can be shortened for everyday use, but open to others.

Josie is lovely.

I suppose for the second one you could use Ava...

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 11/08/2017 08:52

I love Elizabeth.

Some ideas:

Abigail: Father is rejoicing
Eve: life
Hannah: full of grace
Naomi: joy

Congratulations!

Selah

Pronounced say-lah. It isn't traditionally a name (though it is used as one), it's a word used in Hebrew psalms. It's sort of similar to "amen" in that it means "let it be heard" and is used to emphasise the importance of what was said before it.

I like Josefina. Very pretty name.

Maia - Close to God
Bella - Devoted to God
Talia - Dew of Heaven
Nathania - God's gift
Zarah - Days awakening

Joanna - Gift from God
Vanna - God's gift
Samara - Protected by God
Amaris - Given by God

OhWifey · 11/08/2017 11:01

Oh wow I didn't expect so many responses with so many names complete with meanings. Thank you so much. I love so many of these.

Mountain goat?!!!

GherkinsOnToast · 11/08/2017 20:58

We have an Eliana, for very similar reasons to yours, it means God has answered.

StepAwayFromCake · 11/08/2017 21:13

These are lovely names. I love a name with history and meaning.

Orli
Liora (Lee-OR-ah)
Both of them mean 'A light has been given to me'.

rallytog1 · 13/08/2017 19:41

Bethia - 'daughter of God'
Miriam - 'wished-for child'

mummytwoh · 13/08/2017 22:37

We are also Christian and decided on Phoebe which means bright and shinning.
Phoebe is only mentioned briefly in the bible so not many people think of it as biblical.
For me the name was given to us without choice. My pregnancy started asa twin at the scan I was told one baby looked bright & shunning, & the second was dull and weak. We unfortunately lost the 2nd baby, but the very first thing anyone described our baby as was bright & shining so for me her name was Phoebe.

How about Isabella: Devoted to God

TeacupDrama · 13/08/2017 22:43

JUDITH means praise one it's also the feminine version of Judah so simply could also mean woman from Judea

sonlypuppyfat · 13/08/2017 22:46

Deborah means Bee but was important, and I also love dinah

Playmobilpeacock · 13/08/2017 22:50

Marnie means rejoice, which I think is rather lovely.

Jedbartletforpresident · 13/08/2017 22:58

I love Josefina (joey or josie for short).

My DD's names have all been mentioned here which is kind of nice esp as one or two of them are pretty unusual.

As well as the ones we went with, I also loved Moriah which means the Lord is my teacher.

Liora/Orli both mean Light is mine/Light for me/I have light depending on your direct translation from the Hebrew.

Another alternative which is similar is Eliora which means "God is my light"

Elizabeth/Elizabet is actually Greek - the original Hebrew is closer to Elisheva which is lovely too - all meaning "God is my oath"

Good luck! I found boys names far easier to choose - we had several "left over" as we only had one boy and three girls! Girls names with a Hebrew/a Greek background and a significant meaning are hard!

OhWifey · 14/08/2017 10:54

Thank you so much. It's so hard to choose! We already have a daughter with one of the suggested names which excludes a few due to similarities of sounds. Josefina is still in the running. I just wonder whether it's a bit of a mouthful? Our surname is two syllables and middle name will be Hope or Faith so maybe a 4 syllable first name is ok (first daughter is 4 syllables but seems less of a mouthful somehow).
Also love Bethia so that's firmly up there. And love Amaris but worry it's too close to Amorous?!
Lots of others are great too, I hadn't thought of looking at 'light' but those end up quite close to a cousin's name.

If Josefina is too much of a mouthful, how about Josefine/Josephine or Josefa/Josepha? I knew a Josefa, but she was not from UK and pronounced it Yosefa (Yo-SEH-fa), which I think is quite a pretty and dainty variant. I know a few Josephines (all different generations - I guess it's a classic name, rather than a popular one) and they all go by Josie. Though if you're a Chalet School fan you could always go for Joey!

MrsT2007 · 16/08/2017 09:35

Lois?

Mentioned in bible, but has Greek origin meaning most beautiful/most desired

StylishDuck · 16/08/2017 09:44

My DD is Leah which means "weary" apparently Grin I just loved the name so didn't care about the meaning. Even though sometimes it sums up how she makes me feel.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers

MrsMamaG2016 · 16/08/2017 10:31

Mines Hebrew it's Naomi you'll have to look up the meaning though ... plus it's in the bible x
