Levi or Matthew?

Help! I'm being induced today and my husband and I are having second thoughts about our chosen baby name! We want the second name to be Grant, but have returned to feeling undecided between a first name of Levi or Matthew. We generally like classic names; We think Levi sounds better when paired with Grant and is a cute name for a kid- but appropriate for adult man? Do you think it is too hipster/on trend? On the other hand we love the versatility of Matthew (matty, matt etc) but know that it is very common (maybe less so for babies) and we think "Matthew Grant" doesn't sound as good together. What would you pick?!

I love levi find Mathew Awfully dry

Levi is a good solid biblical name but sadly too many people will associate it with clothing.

Matthew is the safer choice.

Levi is terrible. He'll get judged for that. Go with Matthew.

Lemondrop99 · 09/08/2017 11:15

How is Levi 'chavvy'? Other biblical names like Noah, Reuben and Isaac are widely accepted as classic and very popular, and yet Levi is being classed as chavvy? I disagree. I think Levi is also a classic biblical name.

Matthew is fine, inoffensive but a bit dull. He will inevitably become Matt (makes me think of door mat).

OP why don't you flip a coin? You don't have to go with the result, but your initial gut reactionoght reveal a stronger preference either way which you didn't know was there.

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 09/08/2017 11:30

Love them both.

No way is Levi chavy. It's Hebrew and biblical, would you call Noah chavy?

Levi is more unusual and I guess 'trendy' whereas Matthew is classic, some might say boring but I love it.

Matthew!

TurquoiseOwl · 09/08/2017 16:53

Matthew, 100%!

TurquoiseOwl · 09/08/2017 16:55

@Susiethetortoiseshellcat - I don't use the word 'chavvy' at all, so I know your post had nothing to do with me, but yes, I have seen Noah described as 'chavvy' on here!

Matthew by 1000000 miles!

I seem to be in the minority but I would say Levi. Matthew is fine, I don't dislike it, but a bit too common I think, though I'm particularly sensitive there as I was always Firstname Lastname growing up, as there was always someone else with my first name.
I think Levi is a nice name, it's a known name but not so common you can be certain there will be 10 others in his class. I don't associate it with jeans or anything else.

Levi is a lovely name,Matthew is boring.

Ropsleybunny · 09/08/2017 17:21

I love Matthew.

bluediamonds · 09/08/2017 20:13

I prefer Levi but I think Matthew goes better with Grant.

ohherewegoagain · 10/08/2017 19:21

Matthew and Levi both appear in the bible. Levi jeans probably took its name from from the Bible. I love both names.

Sophronia · 10/08/2017 19:48

I said Matthew but I do like Levi as well. Not sure why it's considered "chavvy" when other Biblical names aren't!

TurquoiseOwl · 10/08/2017 20:10

I don't think any of the names are 'chavvy'

@Sophronia - but lots of biblical names are seen as 'chavvy' and Jadon is a lovely example! I have also seen people say Noah, Reuben, Isaac, etc. are, but Jadon definitely is seen as 'chavvy' and I've seen people say Luke is!

Matthew, Levi is awful
