Really struggling with a name for DC2 due soon. DD is Romilly. We have cross-cultural naming considerations. DD was born in the UK but we are now living in Canada and we don't know where these children will ultimately grow up.

Girls:
Jemima - was a runner-up the first time and we still adore it. But the only Jemima we know in Canada gets tons of pancake references... it is really only known through Aunt Jemima pancakes or Puddleduck here (FYI there are no racial connotations to the name here like there are in the US).

Imogen - Might be a safer choice but v popular if we move back to England.

Boys:
Rupert - Maybe TOO posho Brit for Canada. Love the nn Rupe. Not wild about matching R's but I could live with it.

Rufus - a safer choice for Canada. Not sure if it sounds a bit too hipster. Again the R issue.

Jasper - DH's favourite. I think it's just OK.

Frederick - My favourite but DH doesn't love it. Freddie sounds fresh here but if we move back it's overdone in the UK.

Laurence - Would be called Laurie. This was going to be DD's name if she was a boy. I think it's great in the UK but in Canada you meet a lot of middle aged women called Laurie, which is putting me off.

Argh! Help?

Romilly is a lovely name.

From your boys' names I love Rufus, Frederick and Laurence. Both real classics. Frederick could also be Rick. Laurie - great on both men and women, and all ages. What about Magnus, Marcus, Linus?

Jemima and Imogen are pretty but very popular. A few random ideas: Stella, Flora, Miriam, Caroline, Cleo?

Imogen is great for a girl. I've got two primary school age children in the U.K. and it's not that popular.

Jasper and Rupert are a bit posh posh imo. If you like rupe and rufus what about Rafe, Rafferty nnRaff.., or Jude.

Sophronia · 06/08/2017 02:22

Love Jemima and Laurence.

Romilly and Imogen go very well together.
I like Rufus, Jasper and Frederick.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/08/2017 14:26

Don''t think you can use Rufus - It's all a bit Romulus and Remus/Romilly and Rufus.

Not a fan of Jemima or Imogen tbh.

Best pick of the boys is Freddie or Laurie.

Other options:

Meredith
Melissa

Hugh/Hugo
Piers

Thank you all for the suggestions.

For a girl it will be one of the two names we have, we just have to choose.

Boys is more of a struggle. I LOVE Rafe. Unfortunately DH doesn't, he thinks it's too posh (but he likes Rupert Hmm) I also love Hugo but DH is a teacher and has taught so many of them so has a lot of associations, not all good. I have previously suggested Magnus and Marcus but the first one was deemed "too Scandinavian".

Angus instead?

SarahJonesS · 06/08/2017 17:33

I prefer Jemima, I find Imogen really bland. I know an American in the UK who has Jemima as her dds middle name.

I'm not overly joyed by your boys list. I'd choose Jasper. Laurence is also a French girls name which could be an issue if you remained in Canada and we're in Quebec so Lawrence would be better

Allthebestnamesareused · 06/08/2017 17:35

Girls - how about Elodie or Ottilie

Boys - Oscar, Felix, Ferdy

minipie · 06/08/2017 17:53

Jemima of those two

Boys - I like Rufus, Laurie/Lawrie, Freddie. And to add to the suggestions above - Dominic (Dom/Nic), Nathaniel (Nat/Nate), Fergus, Max, Leo

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/08/2017 18:16

Miles?

Bue · 06/08/2017 22:36

SarahJones yes Laurence in Quebec is another issue but I've chosen just to sweep that concern under the carpet... I figure he can just tell people "like Laurence Olivier" and they can't argue with that. I really hate the Lawrence spelling.

I love Nathaniel. DH has vetoed that one too. We're both keen on Kit but I'd insist on Christopher as the full name and he wants "just Kit". His very favourite, which I refuse to consider, is Ernest. I've also suggested Piers. But the Morgan association is rather offputting.

Yika · 06/08/2017 23:57

I love Piers. Great name. Would never think of Morgan.

What about Emil? Dunno why but Ernest made me think of it.

Imogen and Freddie

Xmasbaby11 · 07/08/2017 08:21

Avoid all those beginning with R or they will sound like nursery rhyme characters.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/08/2017 09:20

I love the name Piers, also Lars.
Ernest is another name, that I hope makes a come back.😄
