Names too similar for cousins?

Hello,

I could really do with an outside perspective on this...

Our first baby is due in the next couple of weeks and I am torn between two girls names and can't decide.

The first name is Lucy. However it's quite similar to the name of our niece on my husband's side of the family (think same amount of letters starting with L and ending in Y). We don't see them often and there's quite an age gap between my baby and niece.

I'm worried that it will lead to similar nicknames etc and will be confusing as they'll also have the same surname, especially for my in laws.

Do you think this can work or am I overthinking it?

The other name is Orla. We have an Irish surname and lots of Irish family connections.

Thanks

Lucy & Lily? Absolutely fine, not too similar at all. Lucy is a gorgeous name.

Orla is lovely too. Nice choices.

I'm guessing the other name is something like Lily? If so, I don't think they're too close. If it was something like Eloise/Louisa or Emily/Amelie, that could be but I think you're safe enough. Good luck with the new arrival btw!

My son and my sisters son have similar names. both start and end with same letter and have same origins and There's only 8 months between them. I've never even thought about it tbh.

SerfTerf · 05/08/2017 15:02

What about Lucie as a spelling?

YouLookTiredDaddyPig · 05/08/2017 16:30

Don't see any problem with it at all

ElfrideSwancourt · 05/08/2017 16:31

But you need to remember Lucys are always rascals- was told this by a wise person and it's so true Wink

Unexpectedbaby · 05/08/2017 16:33

I don't think it's too close at all.

We wanted Elliot for DD but have an Ellie in the family and thought that was a bit close but if it's Lucy and Lilly then that's fine.

I do love Orla though.

Crunchymum · 05/08/2017 16:34

Lucy and Lily is fine, Lucy and Lacy (as an example, its obvs spelt Lacey) way too similar.

Lizibet · 05/08/2017 16:44

Unless they're going to be spending loads of time together then it'll be fine

jacketpotatobeansandcheese · 05/08/2017 16:51

Thanks everyone, that has helped reassure me! This is the difficulty with not telling friends and family the names in advance- there's no sounding board!

I think some of my worry came from the fact that our niece gets called Lou as a nickname which would obviously be very similar to Lucy nicknames/pet names i.e. Lucy Lou. I guess realistically for us that shouldn't be a problem, was just thinking about the grandparents

Thanks again

It's truly, absolutely fine.
Lucy is such a sweet name.

LivLemler · 05/08/2017 18:57

Lucy and Lily is fine IMO. Lucy and Lou maybe not quite so much though. Sorry OP.

I think it's fine, even with Lou as a nickname.

What about Lucinda otherwise? Orla is lovely too

I have a teenage son called Harvey, and my brother and his wife recently had a little boy and named him Harley. I think it's fine.
