Having a boy in October. Choosing a name is proving very difficult! Husband seems to want till he's born to discuss/choose!
Love the name Tadhg (I'm Irish) but we live in England so feel like I might be subjecting him to a lifetime or explaining spelling and pronunciation 😬 any thoughts welcome x

I have an uncommon name and always have to spell it. it's really not that big a deal.

I like having an interesting name.

JoyJoyJoyJoy · 05/08/2017 14:08

Thanks to those who explained how it's pronounced. I think that sounds really nice!

Liadain · 05/08/2017 15:01

People learn to say names from Poland, Nigeria, Thailand etc. They will manage an Irish name.

Having said that, I actually dislike Tadhg, so personally it'd be a no to that name - but don't be scared of using an Irish name if it's what you want.

HolyShmoly · 05/08/2017 19:05

I have a nephew Tadhg, I was expecting lots of confusion when I told English friends/colleagues about him. Everyone I spoke to said 'oh like Una from the Saturday's son?' and got it instantly. So for now at least it seems to be more recognisable than I'd expect.
It wouldn't be my favourite name (and I can never get the letters the right way round!) but I wouldn't be put off if you love it.

villainousbroodmare · 05/08/2017 20:31

I love it and it's on my list even though we live overseas now.

RiseToday · 05/08/2017 22:01

Love it

SumAndSubstance · 05/08/2017 22:16

I once taught a Tadgh, pronounced "Tie". Does the spelling make a difference or were they pronouncing it wrong?

autumnkate · 05/08/2017 22:25

Love it. Love the sound and the meaning. Go for it.

squoosh · 05/08/2017 22:29

I wouldn't be mad about the name. It's a bit stage Irish plus the fact that
a version of it (Taig) is used a pejorative would put me off. That said if I loved it I'd use it anyway.

Isadora2007 · 05/08/2017 22:31

Up here (Scotland) a tadge or tadger is a penis.

So it's a no from me.

OkPedro · 05/08/2017 22:38

Tadgh sounds nothing like tadger 😂
Tie gu (kinda) tad jur 👀

NikiBabe · 05/08/2017 22:43

It's a nice name and I've met a Sadhbh before and people who knew her just got used to it.

MSLehrerin · 05/08/2017 23:20

@Isadora2007 you beat me to it! Was just about to say that Tadgh reminded me of tadger so it definitely wouldn't work in Scotland! 😃

Isadora2007 · 05/08/2017 23:42

@okpedro yes I realise it doesn't sound like it. But it does LOOK like it and those who don't know how to say it may say "tadge" as they mix the gd at the end.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/08/2017 23:44

It's a lovely name,I know a teen called this.

BingoFlamingos · 06/08/2017 16:41

I went to school with a Tadgh in a rural and very English area. Was one of nine with Senan, Aoife, Niamh, Ruairi, Padraig, Aideen, Ailish and Saoirse - everyone called them by their name. Maybe a correction once or twice, but generally they were fine.

Tadgh is a gorgeous name!

BingoFlamingos · 06/08/2017 16:42

sodding autocorrect I mean TADHG.

isadoradancing123 · 06/08/2017 17:28

If you are not going to be living in Ireland why subject a child to a lifetime of teasing over his name , very selfish

Icantreachthepretzels · 06/08/2017 18:47

who on earth would tease a child for having the innocuous name of Tadhg? Children will have learned and accepted his name long before they have learnt to spell their own name, never mind worry about his.

MurrayMoo · 06/08/2017 21:21

Thanks for all the comments and opinions guys 😊 really appreciate it. I do still love the name and it's a positive response. Not sure why you think he'd be teased about Hmmodd thing to say!

@squoosh not sure what you mean by 'stage irish'... it's a fairly common name in Ireland 👍

TheLegendOfBeans · 06/08/2017 21:24

Oh I'm so sorry but I really dislike it!

Random suggestions for alternatives:
Oisín
Feargal

MurrayMoo · 06/08/2017 21:25

@Isadora2007 and @MSLehrerin uh oh..DH is Scottish 😬 we don't live there though and don't really see his Scottish family other than immediate..he hasn't put two and two together (think because it sounds so different, but as you say, the spelling does look kind of like it 😬)

OP posts:
squoosh · 06/08/2017 21:30

'Stage Irish' in that it would remind of a character from a John B Keane play. Tadhg wandering around some rocky field in the West shaking his fist at the local landowners.

UnderTheDesk · 06/08/2017 21:36

I've always loved that name. Go for it, Op.

I have a very unusual Irish name and always have to spell it, and have people mispronounce it. It's really not a big deal.
