Apart from Lillian is there anything Lily could be short for?

I know a Liliana

SuperBeagle · 03/08/2017 04:04

Lily is traditionally short for Elizabeth.

But I'm an Elizabeth and I think people would give me the side-eye if I tried to get them to call me Lily, as the diminutive thing is not common knowledge (sort of like Daisy traditionally being a diminutive of Margaret).

More obvious ones:

  • Liliana
  • Lilia
  • Lilibet
  • Lilith

Tigerlily Smile

coffeeandrainbows · 03/08/2017 04:31

Lilevi (one of my favourite names - Swedish and means little fighter)
Lillemor (Swedish)
Lilias (Scottish)
Liliane (French)

GRW · 03/08/2017 05:04

I know an Annalise who is called Lily.

YellowPaisley · 03/08/2017 05:36

Lilivia is lovely

YellowPaisley · 03/08/2017 05:40

Agree with pp Liilevi is beautiful

LadyOfTheCanyon · 03/08/2017 06:23

I love the name Lilith but you may want to bear in mind the folkloric associations (She's a demon). Doesn't bother me but it might some.

17caterpillars1mouse · 03/08/2017 07:34

Lilibeth
Lilith
Liliana

Personally I quite like Lillian though but find Lily way too popular for me to use

Rayche1 · 03/08/2017 09:27

Yeah well the issue is teen dd wants to alter her name as she thinks Lily is too airy fairy (& I completely support her decision) but keep the nn Lily. Trouble is she's not 100% keen on Lillian, Liliana is too trendy. She thinks Lilibeth is just like tacking another name on the end.
Lilia and Lilieve(sp?) possibles. Any other? Is the anything with lily on the end?Grin

Sorry mean Lilevi, is that pronounced Lil - evie? Again she may just think that's tacking on. At least Lillian sounds like its own name

OP posts:
Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/08/2017 09:43

Could she just call herself Lila.

Rayche1 · 03/08/2017 09:44

Too trendy. She wants a serious high court judge type name

OP posts:
retreatwhispering · 03/08/2017 09:46

Elizabeth. Can't go wrong if she's keeping Lily for daily use.

YorksMa · 03/08/2017 09:49

I know a Cordelia who is a Lily.

MelvinThePenguin · 03/08/2017 10:23

I'm interested in the need for a serious name! No issue with it all, just find it funny when I have a 'serious' birth certificate name and do all I can to avoid it! I use a far less formal shortening, even in a serious, professional job.

MelvinThePenguin · 03/08/2017 10:40

Cecily/Cecile?
Emily?

Not -lily exactly, but I wouldn't think Lily was out of the question for a nn.

coffeeandrainbows · 03/08/2017 10:46

Elizabeth is probably the most serious high court judge name that's been suggested (for me at least) and does have the established nickname Lily.

Would something like Delilah or Talila work or are they too airy for her as well?

Or have Lily become a middle name and pick a completely new first name to use outside the family?

daisypond · 03/08/2017 19:44

I like Melvyn's suggestions: Cecilia? Emilia? Lilah? I like Elizabeth and Lilian a lot - and they're both old names with some weight to them, I'd say.

HKW81 · 05/08/2017 06:47

One of our family members is Olivia but has been Lily for as long as anyone can remember!!

Skala123 · 05/08/2017 07:32

My DD is Elizabeth and has always been called Lily. The Queen was called Lilibet as a kid so if it's good enough for her...

MoonPower · 05/08/2017 07:53

Emiliana?
