This is the only boys name that my DH and I can fully agree on, but he pronounces it differently to me.

I much prefer the name pronounced the way I say it, but I don't know who is correct, or if we both are!

I pronounce it Ali-stare, and he pronounces it Alistah.

Who is correct???

Is Alasdhair pronounced how it's written, or is this the name I'm saying?

Please help, I'm confused!

I pronounce it the way your husband does. Although I've heard people say it both ways.

Jooni · 02/08/2017 12:04

I've heard both ways too; I always thought it was sort of an accent thing rather than variant pronunciations, a bit like AlexANder vs AlexAAHnder. I don't think they're so different as to be confusing or problematic.

FWIW I say it more like your DH, but both are nice. AFAIK Alasdhair/Alasdair/Alastair/Alistair are all the same name.

Notonthestairs · 02/08/2017 12:19

It's an accent thing, my Scottish DH says "Al-lister", I say "Al-is-stare" (not sure I've broken that down well but you get my drift.) my DS's friends call him "Ali"!

Sophronia · 02/08/2017 12:26

I pronounce it the same as your husband. I haven't heard it the other way.

Argeles · 02/08/2017 12:46

Thank you for all your answers and suggestions.

It's good to know that neither of us are mis-pronouncing the name, and that we pronounce it differently due to DH and I coming from different parts of the country.

Celestia26 · 02/08/2017 13:54

I say Alis-stare.

RhubardGin · 02/08/2017 14:48

I've never heard it pronounced the way your DH says it.

We're from Scotland. Alistair is on our list and we pronounce it Alice-stair.

Never heard it pronounced another way.

ladylambkin · 02/08/2017 14:57

My son is Alistair...pronounced Alister ....he is known mostly as Ali now he is an adult.

We are Scottish too Rhubarbgin ...I've never had anyone refer to him as Alistare so might be a regional thing?

TheLegendOfBeans · 02/08/2017 14:58

I'm Scottish and pronounce it alis-turr.

haba · 02/08/2017 14:58

I pronounce it like your DH.
Is he very smart?

midsomermurderess · 02/08/2017 15:07

I'm with Beans, Alis-turr.

Salmotrutta · 02/08/2017 16:21

Also Scottish and it's always pronounced ALI-ster round these parts - the "ster" syllable does sound like "stur" though.

Salmotrutta · 02/08/2017 16:23

Accent on the "Ali" (or "Ala" depending on spelling!)

I don't know anyone who pronounces the second syllable as "stair"

weebarra · 02/08/2017 16:28

I have an Alasdair.
We're Scottish, and pronounce it Alas-tair, but not really a "t", more of a cross between a t and a d!

weebarra · 02/08/2017 16:29

I meant turr, not fair!

Happydays21 · 02/08/2017 18:11

Alis-sturr here too (Edinburgh)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/08/2017 18:24

Same as your DH.

golfmonkey · 02/08/2017 19:16

Ala-Sturr

Alastair is my all time fave boys name, really excellent choice x

Argeles · 02/08/2017 22:49

Thank you to all of you for your answers and suggestions.

It's really interesting to hear the different ways the name is pronounced, and that some of you have only heard it pronounced one particular way.

Golfmonkey - thank you, that is lovely. I think it's a gorgeous name.

Ladylambkin and haba - my DH is Scottish and I'm from London, so perhaps in certain areas of Scotland it may be pronounced differently. We're both of very similar intelligence and educational background too haba.

If I saw Alistair or Alastair, I'd pronounce it like your husband.

If I said Alasdair, I'd pronounce it like you.

FartnissEverbeans · 02/08/2017 23:40

I'm Scottish and have never heard anyone pronounce either Alistair or Alasdair as 'Ali- stare'. I've only ever heard 'Allister' and Ive known a lot of them.

17caterpillars1mouse · 03/08/2017 07:38

I pronounce it like you'd husband. It's a really nice name, I slightly prefer Alasdair though which I pronounce Alis-dare

foursthescore · 04/08/2017 10:53

I have a beautiful ds called Alistair. He mainly gets called Alicat or Ali Ababwa as in Aladdin lol

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/08/2017 14:40

Alister or stur/stir here too, Both DH and I pronounce it broadly the same but are from different (lowland) areas of Scotland.

DSs middle name is Alastair but in the family we also have an Alister. I don't like it with a d and neither does DH, he says it's wet with a d but i just think (like a PP) that it changes the pronounciation in my head and tempts me to say Alis daaair :o
