My beloved grandmothers name.
She was the most amazing women and the name is unusual.
Never heard of another Gytha.
It's pronounced "Githa"
Thoughts?

Makes me think of the witch in the Terry Pratchett books, which isn't a bad thing! But definitely don't think of it as a name for a small child.

That said, it's not bad and it has a real family resonance for you. Could you use it as a middle name? Or find a derivative?

ClashCityRocker · 30/07/2017 14:45

Makes me think of nanny ogg too.

Although this thread has made me realise I've been pronouncing it wrong...

Sluttybartfast · 30/07/2017 14:45

Any Terry Pratchett reader is going to picture a heavy-drinking, filthy-minded elderly woman. And most non-Pratchett readers are going to picture an elderly woman.

So it depends if you're OK with that really. Honouring a family member is always lovely.

PattyPenguin · 30/07/2017 14:46

Pratchett fans will reference Nanny Ogg.

Everyone else will just go "what"?

I say go for it. I gave my kids Welsh names (being Welsh), why can't you give your child an Anglo-saxon name? One borne by the daughter of Harold Godwinson, last Saxon king of England, no less.

thingymaboob · 30/07/2017 14:49

Didn't realise it was a name in a TP book. I am Welsh, and do was she!

To be fair nanny ogg is quite an awesome character....i wouldn't rule it out on that basis.

valeriarrgh · 30/07/2017 14:56

I love it! And not just for the Nanny Ogg reference (which just makes it better IMO). It's an unusual, but not toooooo out there, traditional, family name. I really like it.

We used my Nan's name (Doris) as our daughters middle name. I have an aunt who calls her Dotty and I absolutely love it. I would of gone for it as her first name but the husband had his heart set on her first name (it's a lovely name and Doris works really well with it).

Little Gytha. I love it.

Panicmode1 · 30/07/2017 14:58

I was at school with a girl called Gytha (but she pronounced it Guy - ther) . I've never heard of another one....and if you love it and it has family resonance, why not use it, but I suspect it will be one of those names that the owner will always have to spell/correct.

ClashCityRocker · 30/07/2017 15:01

That's how I was pronouncing it in my head, guy-ther.

My only slight concern would be of an ogg related nickname but I'm not sure if tp fandom is widespread enough for that to be an issue.

I'm afraid we're everywhere

But it's very much an adult/older teen thing and I can't see many of them being mean enough to fasten a nanny ogg-related nickname on a small child. If you love it, do it.

HelenaJustina · 31/07/2017 20:08

We are everywhere, but she is an ace character, it's growing on me! And I think you could pronounce it either way, no one is familiar enough with it to correct you!

krakentoast · 31/07/2017 20:15

Love it!

ClashCityRocker · 31/07/2017 20:19

sluttybarfest I think that's what my hungover brain was trying to say! It's not an obvious nickname that kids at school would pick up.

although I can quite imagine my dad referring to her as baby ogg but he's a tosser anyway

Liadain · 31/07/2017 23:10

God, I love Nanny Ogg.
Totally unfamiliar with it other than that op, I have to admit something about it looks weird written down (and I'd probably say "what?" if you told me in person too) but no objections really!

PoppyPopcorn · 01/08/2017 13:28

I wuold have thought it was a boy's name on first impressions. Probably because I know a Gethin which is similar.
