Mary as a middle name - what would you have as a first name?

Just Mary, please no variations or related names. :) I am tossing around a few name ideas myself but none are screaming 'the one' iyswim.

Personally, I'd like to avoid a name ending in y or ie as I'd like it to have a different sound to Mary (I liked Naomi, but Naomi Mary doesn't flow well I think).

Also Irish, so Irish names (no anglicising) are very welcome! I'm not a big fan of surnames as first names, or 'granny names' (Maud, Agnes etc). Open to hearing anything else.

I thought Saoirse Mary before I even opened your post. Didn't even know Irish names were on the cards!

Liadain · 28/07/2017 22:42

Mary is out as a first name I think, as it's my late mum's name and after talking it over with dh (and some lovely mners), it's too close to the bone I think.

Thanks guys, haven't had a proper read through them all as of yet! Caroline and Catherine definitely caught my eye though.

And decaff - great minds think alike! Grin I did mean to post the names in the first post, just had them copied and forgot to add them in.

TBH most names work well, so I would focus on finding something that goes nicely with your surname and then test it against Mary to see if it works as well IYSWIM

I love Catherine Mary, probably biased as my lovely sister is a Catherine but known as Kate.

completely off topic OP but ...

I would spell Liadain as Liadan (and pronounce it like that too - like dan not dain although being irish the a sound would be between an a and an o maybe and the d wouldn't be super hard).

I think it would be a fab first name with Mary as a second name but only if spelled Liadan :)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/07/2017 07:41

They are both lovely OP.

ConstanceCraving · 29/07/2017 08:15

Florence Mary.

Liadain · 29/07/2017 08:58

Liadain is an accepted spelling variation, as far as I can tell, so I'm quite happy with it as is.

Thanks all for suggestions! Smile

If I'd had a dd she would have been Florence Mary. So I agree with pp who've suggested that. I also like Hazel Mary.

Wigeon · 29/07/2017 19:30

My SIL is Catherine Mary which I think flows really nicely.
