Deborah? That spelling...not Debra, not to be shortened to Debbie (if possible - I know I can't control this with friends in the future, etc!!). Just Deborah?

I like the name Deborah. I only know two though, of different generations; one in her late fifties and one in her early thirties. Both are shortened to Debbie or Deb though. I think with longer names like Deborah, shortenings are almost inevitable tbh.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 28/07/2017 17:04

I like it spelled that way, it's due a come back.
I don't like Debbie though.

justhereforAIBU · 28/07/2017 17:09

I'm a Deborah (in a generation of emma's, sarah's and jane's). I have never loved my name, but I've never hated it. I was the only one in my year at school (my twin sister had a few namesakes in our year). Yes, it was shortened...people who know me call me Debs....I hate "Debbie". I've had Disco 2000 sung at me many a time (and thought for a long time that my name didn't suit me - but I think I've grown into it). I do have to spell it over the phone quite often.

Lemondrop99 · 28/07/2017 20:00

Not keen. Also reminds me of women in their 40s/50s who will have friends called Sharon. I don't think enough time has passed to name it "old lady chic" yet

AccrualIntentions · 28/07/2017 21:18

I like it. It's not dated, it's a classic biblical name that just hasn't come back into fashion yet. Although I can't read it without starting to sing the Pulp song in my head.

Liadain · 28/07/2017 21:20

Ah I like it, it's very refreshing. I'm not a massive fan of Deb/Debbie though - if you aren't either, I wouldn't go for it.

I find it hard to imagine a baby Deborah though!

Gaggleofgirls · 28/07/2017 21:43

Not keen.

I think like so many it's because it's a 'normal' name of our generation.
Not new enough to be interesting and not old enough to be due a rerun.
It'll probably be really popular with our grandchildren though.

SuperBeagle · 28/07/2017 21:49

No way.

It's the prime example of an outdated name.

Horrible. Maybe it'll have a resurgence in 20+ years, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

CaoNiMartacus · 28/07/2017 21:54

I love it!

Reminds me of the girl in the Teddy Robinson books.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/07/2017 21:57

I like it, I don't mind the song association and it also makes me think of Debbie Harry, who is a Deborah, which is a good thing.

MissAlabamaWhitman · 29/07/2017 00:23

No.

Not Deborah.

All Deborah's end up living in poky houses with woodchip wallpaper.

Don't you know anything OP?!?

glowwormsunite · 29/07/2017 00:37

Lol MissAlabama!
Thanks all - generally more positive than I thought. I think we're going to go for it. Little Deborah who we already are calling Bee. 🐝

I like this name, which is weird as somebody called Deborah was really nasty to me when I was younger. Normally that association would be strong enough to ruin a name. However, I think it's lovely. Sounds classy to me. I also like Karen.

BubbleBed · 29/07/2017 19:10

I like it. Deborah sounds lovely, and tbh I can imagine it in twelve years in a sea of the students at my secondary school, and it being well placed. A lot of names like that are coming back. Like Nichola, and Joanne/a as well. I think in five years there will be a surge of them, like the Mabel's and Darcy's we have now, George and Edwards etc.

Fekko · 29/07/2017 19:12

When I was a kid it was the coolest name - it was the time of Debbie Harry.

StarHeartDiamond · 29/07/2017 19:21

It's a retro 60s-70s name but it's pretty, like Caroline is retro but still pretty and fresh too Imo. I would go for it!

cottonwool125 · 29/07/2017 19:22

I think it will be a lovely name when she's older. Will sound 'grown up' and professional when she's reached that age, but also has lots of options of shortenings for friends/family (Debs, Debbie etc).

Also calling her Bee as a nickname is adorable! Smile

Littlepond · 29/07/2017 19:26

I love the name Deborah. I taught a lovely Deborah last year, though I'm afraid her friends did call her Debs...

Chaffinch4 · 29/07/2017 19:29

I quite like it and I think those names (Karen, Linda, Pauline etc) will probably be the next generation's popular names, so your Deborah will be setting the trend!

How do you get Bee as a nickname? Or is it just a random nickname rather than coming from Deborah?

mintich · 29/07/2017 19:31

I like it! There was a girl on Big Brother this year called Deborah and she definitely carried it well. I don't think it's dated.

glowwormsunite · 29/07/2017 20:57

The Hebrew meaning is Bee, Chaffinch4. 😎🐝😎🐝

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 20:58

I like it.

Chaffinch4 · 29/07/2017 21:01

Ah, didn't know the meaning. Lovely nickname then.

MeltorPeltor · 29/07/2017 21:04

It never suited her at all...

(Have just gone to the kitchen for wine and can't stop singing.)

parrotonmyshoulder · 29/07/2017 21:17

Love it.
