DP and I are in a bit of a disagreement at the moment about how you pronounce this name.

Could the kind Mumsnetters settle this disagreement once and for all?

I would pronounce it loch-lan . It bugs me tht in emmerdale they call him 'lucky'

Salmotrutta · 29/07/2017 01:32

I'm getting irrationally annoyed by the "Lock"/"Lack" people ..

There is no ck sound.

It's the velar fricative "ch" ... and that's an end to it.

You may insist on a "ck" sound but that's just wrong.

I bid you goodnight.

Scottish = Lach lan

Irish= Loch lan

Can absolutely be both and i know plenty of both.

BeTheHokeyMan · 29/07/2017 01:39

I'm Irish and would pronounce it Lock-lin

LinoleumBlownapart · 29/07/2017 01:57

I say Loch - Lan.

HarrietSchulenberg · 29/07/2017 02:08

I know one in rural middle of England and his family (originally Irish a couple of generations back) call him Lock-lan, with the hard ch/ck sound.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 29/07/2017 02:35

Another Aussie, Lock-lan and they're all 'Lockie' for short Smile

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/07/2017 02:49

I pronounce it Lahch-lan, where the ah sound is a short one, but not as short as a in cat, for e.g., nor as long as in car. If you were singing "lalalalala" you would hit the right length of the a sound.
I don't say Lochlan, where the o sound would be like in clock.

BUt yes, as am also in Australia, everyone round here says Locklun and Lockie.

In Scotland, Lach-lan, with the same sound as in loch (if you're saying it properly, not like lock)

As others have said, in Australia it's Lock-lan.

It was on our list for DS but we ruled it out for this reason.
