I have the most common name that ever existed. I'm sure you can guess. I've spent my whole life at school, university, work, school playground etc having to add a surname on as there are thousands of us.
Anyway I'm starting a new job next week in a small company. There are about 10 women. Currently 3 share my name. However there is another lady starting in the same day and my heart sank when I found out that yes she also has the name. So that's 5 out of 11. Potentially very confusing and I don't want to spent years being known as short x or old x or just a surname.
Anyway so I wondered whether to just say call me y to make things easier.
So I need suggestions assuming you don't think it's ridiculous. I want a nice normal name for a lady aged 46. But nothing too popular of course.

I wish it was Jane. Quite like Jane but there's already a Jane.

That's the other problem with Sarah. No nicknames.

Id probably have a name that was loosely tied to my actual name.

So if it's Laura, something like Laurie, lola, Lara, etc.

A colleague at work is known by choice by her first name and middle name although they aren't hyphenated but probably wouldn't work.

I can see it being a bit of a pain in the arse if you've got to use your official bane in certain situations Eg first aid training or professional qualifications.

How about a nickname rather than a different "proper name" then you can just say everyone calls me by my nickname.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 21/07/2017 19:40

Am I imagining things or is Sally a nickname for Sarah?

Freakishlycommon · 21/07/2017 19:40

I don't even have a nickname.

I think Sally is traditionally short for Sarah.

RedSandYellowSand · 21/07/2017 19:41

Problem us, you won't respond to your name in a normal way, so you will be seen as cold, and anti-social.
I go by my middle name, and it always rakesxa few seconds if someone calls me by my official name.

So, say I'm Sarah Louise Smith. If soneone calls out Louise, or Louise Smith, or Mrs Smith, I immediately associate that with me. When the Reciptionist says Sarah Smith to Dr Jones, I do pleatky blank it. It's not "me".

So, yes. It sounds great. But is unlikely to work in practice.

ClashCityRocker · 21/07/2017 19:41

I think I could stretch to sasha being a nickname for Sarah - Sally maybe?

Sarey Ive seen in a book somewhere.

BertrandRussell · 21/07/2017 19:42

Mega snap!

Orangepear · 21/07/2017 19:43

Sally is a nickname for Sarah.

HelenaJustina · 21/07/2017 19:43

Sally is a known nn for Sarah, go with that? It's only for work and you might not be there forever!

Freakishlycommon · 21/07/2017 19:43

Yes Red that's true I hadn't thought of that but I definitely don't want be seen as stand offish.

Does your middle name have a nickname that your mum doesn't use?

My mate Sarah is called Saz, but it isn't very professional I suppose.

ClashCityRocker · 21/07/2017 19:44

Sadie is also a nickname for Sarah and I think a bit funkier than Sally.

Rach5l · 21/07/2017 19:44

Liz
Anna
Catherine
Steph
Alex
Stevie
Susie

Freakishlycommon · 21/07/2017 19:46

Maybe the initials need to stay the same to help a bit as my signature is basically my initials and so thinking about it that could be tricky.

I think you should pick a name or nickname you like and get everyone to call you it from now on.

InvisableLobstee · 21/07/2017 19:49

If it's a complete change of name you could always change it by deed poll.

QueenMorpheacadoChamelepen · 21/07/2017 19:51

What about Sarah-Jane?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 21/07/2017 19:53

Ooh no I think it would take a lot of unnecessary energy to remember your new name. You'd find yourself ignoring people and might forget and respond when your real name crops up or accidentally introduce yourself using your real name.
It's sounds like a headache to me.
What if your Dh or a family member rings the office asking for you? He'll be told "eh? No sorry no one of that name here"
