Harri or Ranulph?

First baby. He's two days old and we can't pick a name.

I think we are down to two

Harri (surprisingly my Englishman husband likes the Welsh spelling - we currently live in Wales but likely to move about a bit)

Or

Ranulph

The pros to Harri is that he kind of looks like a Harri and my husband had championed it from the start. I like it but just feel is terribly popular at the moment - oh like ANOTHER Harri.

Ranulph is a name we both like as we've gone along. It's hard to imagine it as a baby name though I think teen/man it's great. I guess it would go to Ran as a nickname which is fine.

What do we do mumsnetters?

What do you think of these two names?

Personally prefer Ranulph as Ran is such an excellent nickname, with the added coolness of Ranulph Fiennes as a namesake.

Topseyt · 19/07/2017 17:16

Harri, though I would spell it Harry.

Tilapia · 19/07/2017 17:17

Harri, I prefer Harry though

BelafonteRavenclaw · 19/07/2017 17:18

We live in Wales and almost picked Harri for DS2. It's a lovely name.

Glumglowworm · 19/07/2017 18:24

Harri

As long as you don't mind correcting the spelling when people assume Harry

sonlypuppyfat · 19/07/2017 19:15

I don't think they are attractive names, there's loads of brilliant Welsh names why don't you look at those, all mine have Welsh names

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/07/2017 19:56

Oh, Ranulph is truly fabby !

MrsCaecilius · 19/07/2017 19:58

Love Ranulph! Great name and Ran is a fab nn.

Harry is sweet and I respect the Welsh spelling. But if you move people will assume it's spelled Harry.

Ranulph wins for me!

RelaxMax · 19/07/2017 20:10

Ranulph!

I have a cousin ranulph and it is really cool. He's known as Ran, Rando, or Nulfi depending on who's talking.

ilivebythesea · 19/07/2017 20:13

Ranulph definitely, nn Ran I like too. If you go with Harri, once you move from Wales, people may assume he's a girl if they see it written down, nn for Harriet, or spell it Harry.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/07/2017 20:14

Harry.

Harri is the girls version.

eyebrowsonfleek · 19/07/2017 20:15

Do you live in England or Wales? Harri looks like a nickname for Harriet to me (English )

crazypenguinlady · 19/07/2017 20:17

Harri. I know an adorable one year old Harri (we also love in wales) so a great association for me Smile

Sophronia · 19/07/2017 20:51

Ranulph is more interesting

GetOffTheTableMabel · 19/07/2017 23:16

I quite like Harri but I think that if he is a teenager who no longer lives in Wales, he's quite likely not to thank you for the spelling and it's entirely possible he'd just change it anyway. It also could be mistaken for a female version, or a variation of the Indian spelling - Hari.
Ranulph is v cool.

Cami12 · 19/07/2017 23:45

Really liking Ranulph! (Not another Harry!Shock)

Theveryhungrybutterfly · 20/07/2017 12:45

Ranulph is definitely better. Does it sound a bit too much like Rudolph though? Ran is cute.

ScarletSienna · 20/07/2017 14:11

Ranulph is brilliant!

UKrider · 20/07/2017 20:01

Thank you everyone. Taking it all on board.

Do you think he could end up being called Randy even he used nn Ran or Rando?

ScarletSienna · 20/07/2017 20:45

There's a possibility but it didn't come to indigent was thinking of diminutives

ScarletSienna · 20/07/2017 20:45

*didnt come to mind!

UKrider · 20/07/2017 21:39

It didn't occur to me either until I mentioned it to my mum and she said it 😩

Floellabella · 20/07/2017 21:42

I don't think so OP. There's no D in Ranulph so it's a bit of a stretch. Willy is much more likely for William but people call their kids William all the time

RelaxMax · 20/07/2017 21:55

Just checked with my cousin by text, and he said he's only called "Rando" because he was a bit random in school - into eccentric things. So I don't think that's a typical nickname for Ranulph. And he's never been called Randy!

UKrider · 20/07/2017 22:16

Thank you! That's good to know! Very kind of you to do that.
