Niamh?

What do you think of Niamh? I have worried on and off about the spelling / pronunciation although love it as a beautiful name and would def want original spelling if did use it. We are not Irish, but are Scottish and live in Scotland so I think the Gaelic pronunciation will come easy enough as just the same as Mhairi etc but not sure...? Grateful for any opinions!

Lovely!!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/07/2017 10:30

Great.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 19/07/2017 10:31

I think it's lovely, and not so unusual that people wouldn't know how to pronounce it

thisismadness77 · 19/07/2017 10:32

Gorgeous. We have a Neve but I love the traditional spelling, DH preferred it spelt out way and I didn't really mind. Just love the name any way! She's the only one in her year, I don't think we have met another in 5 years.

PlymouthMaid1 · 19/07/2017 10:34

Lovely and one that a lot of non Celtic folk know how to say proper!y.

Jooni · 19/07/2017 11:36

I like it a lot. Simple and unfussy.

kiwiscantfly · 19/07/2017 11:46

Yes it's lovely!
People get used to unusual names very quickly. I have an Eilidh and we live in NZ. Once we explain how to pronounce it nobody even bats an eyelid.

Go for it!

LoveAnIrishName · 19/07/2017 11:54

My daughter is Niamh. I have loved it since I was a teenager. My DH is of Irish parents but we all live in London. She started school this year and I've never had a problem there or at nursery with mis-pronunciation.

There is also a beautiful Irish folk tale called "Niamh and Oisin" which makes the name even prettier to me.

LoveAnIrishName · 19/07/2017 11:55

I forgot to say there are three other "Niamh's" in her school but she does go to a catholic school with a lot of kids with Irish parents.

Worriednearlymum · 19/07/2017 23:07

Love it. Lovely name and never met one I didn't like. Niamh was on my shortlist but my husband vetoed. Go for it! Lovely to see it spelt properly as well.

villainousbroodmare · 19/07/2017 23:12

Lovely, especially for a blonde girl (Niamh Cinn Óir was the legendary heroine).

caffelatte100 · 19/07/2017 23:17

I don;t like it and don't know how to pronounce it. I;ve seen this before though on MN, it's a popular name...

coldcanary · 19/07/2017 23:19

Lovely name. We considered it but it didn't go with the surname very well.

Viviennemary · 19/07/2017 23:19

Not keen at all. How do you even pronounce it. One of those names I think.

mintich · 19/07/2017 23:21

I'm also Scottish and I have a Niamh. Only 1 person has not known how to pronounce it, most people do know

DramaAlpaca · 19/07/2017 23:30

Beautiful name.

For those asking, it can be pronounced to rhyme with leave or, if you are from my part of Ireland, it's more like NEE-uv, with two syllables.

MaudGonneMad · 19/07/2017 23:33

If you don't know how to pronounce it, how do you know you don't like it? Confused

And what does 'one of those names mean'?

laGrosellaEspinosa · 19/07/2017 23:33

Niamh. I like it. Beautiful legend name.

MFR3 · 19/07/2017 23:43

Beautiful name. Go for it.

stumblymonkeyagain · 19/07/2017 23:51

I like it, I have a friend with a daughter called Niamh and I think it's lovely!

HolyShmoly · 20/07/2017 21:08

Niamh is gorgeous. It's one of my niece's name, otherwise it would be a shortlisted one for me. DH doesn't like it, but he dislikes all 'eve' sounding names for some reason (I love them.)

zinniazuri · 21/07/2017 00:31

One of the most beautiful names imo.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 22/07/2017 13:51

Love it but never hear British people pronounce it correctly.

whiteroseredrose · 22/07/2017 14:16

Pretty. But definitely Neem to me.

whiteroseredrose · 22/07/2017 14:17

Sorry, forgot to say that's because that is how a DC's mother pronounced it.
