Olivia or Esme????

Suggestions please??
My wife and I currently have 2 favourite names for our DD due in August, olivia or esme. We love them both for different reasons, olivia is beautiful but very popular at the moment, esme is beautiful, not that common BUT we already have a daughter called Bella, so we risk looking like Twilight nutters, which we definitely are not!!!!

We were set on olivia but now are leaning towards esme on the home straight.

Any thoughts????

Love Esme (prefer EZ-may pronunciation to EZ-mee, but great name whatever).

Olivia's pretty, but around here it's very, very popular...

Jooni · 15/07/2017 18:17

Esme (but I like "EZ-mee"). The Twilight thing isn't a huge issue I don't think, but the multiple pronunciations might bother you.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 15/07/2017 18:18

^ Oh, and if it's any consolation, I wouldn't have even thought "Twilight" on hearing the names combination! Smile

AutumnalLeaves38 · 15/07/2017 18:20

OP,

Could Esme Olivia (middle name) be a possibility?

DB81 · 15/07/2017 18:23

Thanks very much. Yes there's definitely lots of pronunciations for esme, we like Ez-may but not sure if we should have the hyphen. I believe it's originally French so could be a way to go... or just leave it without the hyphen.

Good shout. I like it... esme rose was a possibility but esme olivia is also really nice.

My cousin has an Esmè with the hyphen (Ez-May) I think it's lovely and Esmè Olivia would be a beautiful combination!

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 18:35

Esme is lovely. Definitely no hyphen! That would be weird like calling her Ra-chel or Li-ly.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 15/07/2017 18:40

^ Sorry...just to clarify: wasn't suggesting a hyphen being involved! Was just writing it like that as syllable breaks! EZ-MAY.

Definitely "Esme", not "Ez-May"...or are you talking about accents on the end 'e' anyway?

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 18:42

Oh yes maybe the OP meant the accent. Phew.

SacharissaCrisplock · 15/07/2017 18:43

Esme makes me think of Esme Weatherwax from the Discworld books but she's a brilliant strong character so that shouldn't be a problem.

MusicToMyEars800 · 15/07/2017 18:46

I love the name Esme, Olivia is a nice name, but I prefer Esme.

Sophronia · 15/07/2017 18:46

I definitely wouldn't stick a hyphen in it! I do prefer Esme to Olivia, just because it's a bit less popular.

DB81 · 15/07/2017 18:47

It would either be Esme or Esmè and also we love olivia now as a middle name. Thanks for your help.

Bit off-topic, but still relevant(ish) :
My French is so rusty I'm happy to stand corrected, but would "Esme" need an acute accent over the "e"...as in é of soufflé...

or a grave one...like è ?
Have no clue what sound that makes. Or is it used to change whole word?

Anyone knowlegeable want to explain? Can't be bothered to research too much wine

EmilyAlice · 15/07/2017 18:57

It should be an acute accent Esmé or even Esmée.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 15/07/2017 19:07

Told you I've had far too much wine...I meant "knowleDgeable.

OP, Esme (or Esmé/ Esmée!) Olivia flows nicely, and sounds very pretty...good choice. (Hope her arrival next month goes smoothly for Mother and baby). Flowers

Thanks for info, EmilyAlice

OP,

Woohoo...feel very proud.
You now have a duty to post pic of said gorgeous girl when she's safely here, so we can all gaze at her newborn loveliness!

(Only if you/ your DW feel comfortable doing so, of course).

TurquoiseOwl · 15/07/2017 22:38

Olivia is definitely nicer!

Pinkandgreenandblue · 16/07/2017 23:12

Yes don't get the accent wrong! It's Esmé or Esmée
