Family member has new baby called Rex. I'd never considered the name before and wondered what most thought. I liked Rex Harrison way back but my little grandson said'Oh like Tyrannosaurus Rex?"

OP posts:

I’ve never heard of a dog called Rex, have you really?

No, and I've never met a dog called Rover or a cat called Tiddles but they are almost 'shorthand' for cat and dog names.

Have you ever met a Joe Bloggs or a Jane Doe? Nope, but they are 'generic' people names in the same way that Rover and Rex are generic dog names.

I do quite like it as a name though.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 13/07/2017 15:07

mollyminniemo They actually are (human) names, though.

If you're calling your kid Rex, you may as well go the whole hog and call him Fido.

mollyminniemo · 13/07/2017 15:10

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 Sorry that you have heard 1 or 2 dogs called Rex, about 500 years ago and still cant shake the past...! Time to get into the 21st century.

The origin of the name Rex- From Latin rex "king". It has been used as a given name since the 19th century.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 13/07/2017 15:10

I think the dog thing doesn't occur to the younger generations

Rex is more associated to a dog with the older generation.

I'm in my twenties, so it's not just an older generation thing that think Rex is a dog's name.

meettherussians · 13/07/2017 15:14

Haha if those are names whattodo... likes it's clearly not worth taking her bizarrely nasty comments on this superb name into account... Jane, Kai and Macy- May?? Really. But a name that's been used as a name for homosapians for over 200years not a real name then? Confused

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 13/07/2017 15:18

Jane dates back to the 17th century, and Kai is from the Roman era (comes from Gaius).

Macy is a lot newer, and on its own I don't really like it, but I think it flows well as Macy May.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 13/07/2017 15:20

Haha my Daughter's name is shortened to Tiggy. Do I care it's a common name for cats? Literally not a second of my life wasted worrying about it, nope.
Rex is a great name!

mollyminniemo · 13/07/2017 15:24

Exactly Waitrose, and love Tiggy. Imagine Tiggy and Rex...but think the cat and dog associations might just be too much for poor WhatToDoAboutThis2017 Smile

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 13/07/2017 15:26

I have 4 children, all but one of their names probably hated on Mumsnet. Couldn't care less!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 13/07/2017 15:33

Tiggy is a nickname, not actually on the birth certificate. No problem with that.

BrieOnAnOatcake · 13/07/2017 15:39

I'd think dogs name. Or possibly dinosaur.

I don't like it as a name regardless but would never say it to a person who chose it.

Skyatnight4 · 13/07/2017 16:01

Wow itds really not an out there name at all. It's just a normal name. I don't get all the fuss. At the worst someone might think dogs name for a split second. Same way I do when i hear bella or milly. It's really not a big deal.

Scattymere · 13/07/2017 16:13

I have a Rex! Am so glad some of the few on here who insist its a dogs name have also been revealed to have pretty shockingly poor taste in the names they do actually like, which kind of proves the point.
No name is universally loved. There are so many on here professing their love for it. There was a lot of of love for it when I had DS (glad so many of my friends have taste Grin) and he is a cool, quirky, gorgeous boy who completely suits his name, yet stands apart from the many William's and Oliver's in his nursery known as "William O...Oliver S..." while he's just Rex, and awesome.

overmydeadbody · 13/07/2017 16:23

I think it's a lovely name. I know two, one adult and one teen and they both suit the name perfectly and have never had issues with it.

Skyatnight4 · 13/07/2017 16:24

Scattymere I don't think anyone "insisted" it's a dogs name. Just that they think dog when they hear it as in the past it was a known as a dogs name. So it's not so shocking that people would have that association with the name. Like I said above its a perfectly nice normal name and not everyone has that association nowadays.

ConstanceCraving · 13/07/2017 18:01

Rex is lovely.

ConstanceCraving · 13/07/2017 18:05

Ignore WhatToDoAboutThis2017 and the cruel comment. Probably done just for a reaction as usual.

Buntysoven · 14/07/2017 01:08

Rex is a brilliant name. My aunt has a boarding kennels and I have never met a Rex there. Maya Huey Lydia Bella Oscar Archie Alfie Charlie yes but not 1 Rex.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 14/07/2017 01:11

First thing I thought of was "T" ! Then the dog. Sorry!

SuperBeagle · 14/07/2017 02:55

I just think it's a horrid name, for a dog or for a child.

WanderingTrolley1 · 14/07/2017 03:30

"Rrrrahhhh! Were you scared?"

meettherussians · 14/07/2017 09:57

I think its 1 thing giving honest options on a name where OP has just asked for future baby,. Yet another when several people on the thread then say this is their young daughter/sons name, and people still come on and say the name is “horrible”. I actually think that makes you pretty horrid actually.
Another case in point- quick look up of SuperBeagle past name comments- she like: “Lindsay for a boy. Also like Joss.” And also likes:Lucy, John and Peter.
So safe to say very different type of person to someone cool enough to call their kid a slightly different (oh no! how dare anyone want to stand apart from the crowd and not conform/blend in in every way!) , yet still traditional (been around for 200 years) name like Rex.

Huffletuff · 14/07/2017 19:32

I actually know 6 dogs called Kai.

Sallywiththegoodhurr · 14/07/2017 19:36

OP I absolutely love the name Rex. If this baby is a boy then it will be his name!

nowyersuckindiesel · 14/07/2017 20:06

Love Rex. Very cool name.
