Is Alan popular in Ireland? We are on holiday and there is a family with an approx 10 yr old called Alan. Sounds dated to me!

You could call him Al???

ImSoUnoriginal · 12/07/2017 11:05

It does sound a bit dated but he could have been named after a family member or they may just have liked the name. Wink

I did think that although he is youngest if 3 boys.

I do like it actually, although most people will think it's dated. Its time will come!

I've never met a young Alan in Ireland, or an older one either tbh. It's not popular here at all.

As said upthread it might be a family name.

sugarhoneyicetea · 12/07/2017 13:21

No, definitely not poplar in Ireland. I'm a teacher so come across hundreds, if not thousands, of names & I know one Alan in his 30s.

Nospringflower · 12/07/2017 13:31

Ok - he must be unusual! I did wonder! Thanks folks!

Maybe not this spelling of Alan (which every other man over the age of 60 around here seems to be called), but I have a feeling that Allen/Allan might be a name that starts creeping back up the popularity rankings before long. Just a hunch- I might be very wrong!

All the men of 60 plus who aren't called Pete, Steve or Jon are called Alan.
