Juliet or Juliette

Reaching a bit of an impasse with girls names.

We both agree, so far, only on Juliet/Juliette. I think we both prefer the shorter spelling but I want to use Ette on a day to day basis. Would that work if we used Juliet?

Any other fairly traditional but unusual names we could use? Has to go with a double barreled surname so nothing too long and nothing starting with the letter R.

I think it depends on how you are planning to pronounce it, because I say Juliet & Juliette quite differently.

To me, Juliet is JOOL-yet and Juliette is Juli-ETTE, the French way. (Sorry, it's hard to write pronunciations down, but I hope that makes sense!)

So if you want to call her Ette, I'd go for Juliette.

I personally prefer Juliet, but they are both beautiful names.

Juliet. I pronounce both the same in my accent though.

I prefer Juliette - I just like the symmetry at the end. It's on our list and we would spell it Juliette. Just out of interest, how would you pronounce 'Ette'? Would it be 'eh-tt-ey'?

Had dc2 been a girl, we would have named her Juliette. Absolutely love it.

lucyintheskye · 10/07/2017 14:04

Juliet as in Romeo and Juliet!

ConstanceCraving · 10/07/2017 14:22

Juliet for sure.
Eleanor
Esme
Clemency

Lovely name. I like both spellings. Slight preference for Juliet.

Sophronia · 10/07/2017 16:13

Juliet, but I never know whether to say it JOO-lee-et or joo-lee-ET.

Re Juliet/Juliette I slightly prefer Juliet

bridgetreilly · 10/07/2017 16:58

Juliet. And yes Etta would be fine as a shortening.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/07/2017 18:11

Juliet, love Etta.

TurquoiseOwl · 15/07/2017 02:06

Juliet

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 03:11

Juliet looks nicer but I prefer the sound of Juliette.

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 03:15

But it makes me feel a bit sad that you would choose lovely Juliet/Juliette as the official name and then instantly discard it for, the much plainer in comparison, Etta.

Etta/Ette holds none of Juliet's charm.

midsomermurderess · 15/07/2017 22:18

Juliet, the other spelling is to flouncy for me.

Billynoname · 15/07/2017 23:14

I have a baby Juliet. I pronounce both spellings the same way but much much prefer the look of Juliet.

We get nothing but compliments on it- very happy with our choice X

Yika · 15/07/2017 23:27

Juliet for me, don't like the frilliness of Juliette. I pronounce the the same, emphasis on the last syllable.

Other suggestions:
Celia
Dinah
Helen
Leonie
Venetia
Bianca
Iris

My 4yo is Juliet. The extra letters seem a bit superfluous - and she's not delicate enough for the 'ette', it turns out.

But you'll be correcting people either way. It's just easier to say "like Romeo and..."
