What do you think of the name Eoghan? For our little boy?

How should it be pronounced? I see it as eeoffan but sure that's not right.

blueskyinmarch · 07/07/2017 19:35

I don’t know how to pronounce it either. Owen? Ewan?

sunnywithadashofgin · 07/07/2017 19:35

This is Owen right? A boy in my class at school had this spelling and was called "ooh gan" by everyone, even though we were in Ireland!

photographyaddict · 07/07/2017 19:36

Reminds me of Eoghan Quigg from X-Factor a few years ago! Cute name! Smile

emochild · 07/07/2017 19:36

I like it if either of you are Irish or close Irish heritage

If not I'd just use the Welsh version so there are no issues with pronunciation and spelling

BertrandRussell · 07/07/2017 19:38

Why?

Amoia · 07/07/2017 19:41

@BertrandRussell why what?

Yes, that's correct! @sunnywithadashofgin that doesn't sound good!

Why would you give your child a name that he will have to spell/explain every single time he gives it for the next 80 years?

Amoia · 07/07/2017 19:49

@BertrandRussell erm how was I supposed to know it would be an issue. I'm Irish and living in Ireland. It's like saying Sebastian would be an issue in England.

If you're in Ireland it's fine. I know a couple of Eoghans.

People will put Eoin though and he will have to spell it a lot.

Would you consider Eoin?

Frazzled2207 · 07/07/2017 19:51

Well that's fine then. But given that most mumsnetters are not Irish you can't be surprised that most of us gave the same response!

MeanAger · 07/07/2017 19:51

Oh ignore. There are millions of names that can be spelt different ways.

Eoghan is fine and perfectly easy to say and read in Ireland.

TerfwithaNerf · 07/07/2017 19:54

It's a grand name but the spelling just makes me think of Harry Hill saying 'Ee-og-an Quigg' now.

MasterOfDisguise · 07/07/2017 20:09

I'm a big fan of traditional Irish names with their traditional spellings (my own DS has one) but in the case of Eoghan for some reason I always see it and hear Eggnog in my head. But I'm going to be the only person who thinks that. And in any case eggnog makes quite a cute nickname Wink

RuggerHug · 07/07/2017 20:32

I think it's fine as a name in Ireland but it is one of the more butchered ones abroad (I went out with an Eoghan for years). So as long you're okay with that then I'd say go for it. Is there a reason you don't want to use Eoin out of curiosity?

Aloethere · 07/07/2017 20:35

I'm in Ireland and knew straight away how it was pronounced. I can't see it being much of an issue here. As for the name itself I think it's a bit bland but if you like it I can't see a reason not to go for it.

KatyBerry · 07/07/2017 20:42

it looks like phlegm written down. There are so many utterly brilliant Irish names for boys, and that one isn't one of them

DramaAlpaca · 07/07/2017 20:42

I'm also in Ireland, but am English.

Eoghan is fine, but I like Eoin better.

In the UK, Eoin would be a better choice as it's more familiar thanks to the author Eoin Colfer and the cricketer Eoin Morgan who at least some people will be familiar with. Eoghan is harder for Brits to get their heads around.

MeanAger · 07/07/2017 20:46

I say the more people that use the more traditional spelling of names (from all countries) the better. It's the only way people who are not used to them will get used to them and stop coming out with ridiculous rude comments about perfectly normal names.

April241 · 07/07/2017 20:51

I think it's lovely, Scottish here and knew how to say it.

There's tons of names that need spelling out, my name and surname both need spelling out every time I'm talking over the phone to companies etc

"Hi, I'm carol"
"is that with or without an e?"

"Hi, I'm Stephen"
"Is that a ph or a v?"

Wink

You get used to it, I just spell mine automatically now if I'm on the phone or sorting a new contract etc

MiniMaxi · 07/07/2017 20:59

I know a very nice Eoghan - I like the name!

Funnily enough he gets Eggnog too** Smile

Worriednearlymum · 07/07/2017 21:05

Lovely name
Spell it that way. Eoghan is a great name. Easy to say and not too many about

chowmeinchick · 07/07/2017 21:13

I remember there being a boy with this name on X factor when I was younger. I used to think it was funny because the letters didn't actually spell out how it sounded but now I know, and I've got used to what it actually says, I think it's really nice. I also know it's the Irish way so I'm use it wouldn't be a problem over there.

Sophronia · 07/07/2017 23:19

I really like it.

IntegritasAdSalutemVocat · 07/07/2017 23:43

My cousin is Eoghan and I love it!
