Popularity of Mila

I see that Mila has become popular recently and I'm wondering why? The only Mila I know of (I don't know many children) is the actress Mila Kunis. I think parents without East European roots are choosing this name so I'm wondering if Mila Kunis is the inspiration for this increased popularity. If that's the case, what happens if Mila Kunis is involved in some scandal in future?

The reason I ask is I have always liked Winona as a girls name (nn Winnie) but with Winona Ryder having a difficult few years, I don't think I'm brave enough to use it!

I don't actually know any Mila's, but I think an increase in popularity is more likely linked to 1) an increase in Eastern European parents in the UK and 2) people looking for names in the Amelia/Amelie/Millie/Emily family that are not completely overused. I doubt it's to do with Mila Kunis and I don't think any Mila Kunis scandal would make a difference to the name.

I'm not keen on Winona personally. I think it's more closely tied to the actress because she's maybe more famous than Mila Kunis and it's a more unusual name.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 07/07/2017 16:55

The only Mila I know is short for Amelia.

Use Winona if you like it! Weren't her difficult few years a couple of decades ago now? Winnie is cute.

ShutupanddriveM5 · 07/07/2017 17:06

I know a few Milas but as pp said I think it's due to the rise in popularity of the whole Mia/Maya/Myla/Millie trend. I think it's very pretty.
I think Winona is more unusual which is probably why it's linked with the actress but I don't think it really matters as that was ages ago! I know a Winter nn Winnie which is pretty cute

Sophronia · 07/07/2017 18:40

I think it's become popular because of Mila Kunis.

Glumglowworm · 07/07/2017 18:59

I only know two. One is now a teen and the other is a toddler. I think it's a lovely name, simple but not overused. I was quite surprised that it's in the top 100 now

Mrsknackered · 07/07/2017 19:16

I too think it's because of Mila Kunis.
I know one who isn't named after Kunis but that is where they heard the name from.
I know a French Winona in her late 20's. I don't particularly think Ryder automatically and children born these days are very unlikely to know who Winona Ryder is.

daisypond · 07/07/2017 19:17

I know a teenage Mila. It's a Spanish name (parents are Spanish) as well as East European.

Notbraveenough · 26/07/2017 21:47

Thanks for the feedback. I might use it as a middle name.

I've heard of a few recently, also spelt Myla.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 26/07/2017 21:50

I don't know any Mila's. And I know a lot of people who are Eastern European.

SuperBeagle · 26/07/2017 21:58

Winona's legal issues were, like, 16 years ago. I think we can move on. Grin. She's brilliant in Stranger Things, and I think her comeback in that has washed away a lot of the "scandal" in her past as if other celebrities have never done similar, if not worse, things

I know one Mila and one Milla (pronounced the same, weirdly), to answer your question.

Winona is a nicer name than Mila, and Winona Ryder is an infinitely cooler association than Mila Kunis.

Hotpinkangel19 · 26/07/2017 22:04

Winona is not a nicer name than Mila!

SuperBeagle · 26/07/2017 22:10

Hot That's your opinion. I stated mine. Carry on.

friedegs · 26/07/2017 22:21

Mila/Maya/ Milla/ Mya - very popular at the moment. There are more interesting choices IMO.

mamabeak · 26/07/2017 22:45

When Spanish it is short for, Emilia, or more ordinarily Milagros.

mamabeak · 26/07/2017 22:46

I do not know any Mila but I know Milena (Eastern European) and two Malina/Malena (one German, one Swedish).

Londoncalling68 · 26/07/2017 22:48

What about Myra?

teaandakitkat · 26/07/2017 22:50

The only Mila I know is short for Sharmila, her parents are from Bangladesh. So it's not popular at all in our area, I don't know anyone with that actual name.

Sittingonthefence83 · 26/07/2017 23:22

I know 3 Mila's and all 3 have Eastern European parents.

rememberpurpleronnie · 26/07/2017 23:24

Sorry, but it's a brand of catheter in the medical industry and that's all I picture when I hear the name! (It's a high quality brand though!) Grin

schnubbins · 26/07/2017 23:28

And Melena is the medical name for black tarry stool.

eyebrowsonfleek · 27/07/2017 01:02

I've noticed fewer Lila (pronounced Leela) and more Mila
