Kit / Kitty for girl?

Is Kit for a girl fine? Or would putting Kitty be better? I don't like Katherine or any others sadly!

I know a Kitty. She isn't cutesy...quite the opposite. Thoughtful, perceptive and not afraid to say what she thinks. A good mum (am I allowed to say that on mumsnet?) If not...a good enough mum.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/07/2017 21:31

Really love Kitty.

daisypond · 08/07/2017 21:41

You could go for Katrina, Christina, Catriona or Kezia maybe?

Topseyt · 08/07/2017 21:58

Kitty just makes me think of cats. Kitty cats.

Then there would be KitKat chocolate bars.

For that reason I couldn't take it seriously as a name at all. Sorry.

grufallosfriend · 08/07/2017 22:20

Kitty cat is just too cutesy and comical imo. I'd much prefer to be called Katharine or Karina.

I knew a kitty who was really Elaine.

Ohyesiam · 08/07/2017 23:41

I've always loved Kitty. It doesn't seen cutesy to me, it has gravitas.

Myu5ername · 09/07/2017 00:26

Love Kitty - one of my faves. Definitely not cutesy and doesn't need a longer alternative. yawn

GreenTulips · 09/07/2017 00:31

My gran was a Kitty - not short for anything - never had any issues!!!

yourerubberimglue · 09/07/2017 00:46

I love both x

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 09/07/2017 00:56

I think Kitty is cute up until early 20s and then ok as on old lady but in those intervening years tbh, it doesn't seem right. It lacks gravitas imo.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 09/07/2017 01:00

We have a Kitty with a longer name on her BC. Can't say it find it any "cutesy-er" than the Elsie's etc in her class! She's a bloody wrecking ball which is probably why..:

Mollie85 · 09/07/2017 07:48

If it helps any, I'm a Kirsty and although not officially a Nn, when I lived in Ireland my Nn became Kitty due initially to a misreading of my name...

I actually really liked it, came back home and I'm back to "Kirst" (Cursed) which I flippin hate and spend my life correcting. Grin

Mumoftheark · 09/07/2017 08:07

My 5 year old DS has a Kitty in his class it suits her. As far as I'm aware it's not short for anything.
Kit however is annoys name so I wouldn't use that

birdgal4848 · 09/07/2017 13:32

I know an adult Kitty and a little girl Kitty- both very different but both suit their names perfectly.

HeadlessGummyBears · 10/07/2017 12:04

When I think of the name Kitty, it always conjures Bel Mooney's books in my head since I read those books as a kid. I then think of Anne Frank's diary Blush

Kitty can be a cute as a nickname but would be better to have an "official" name just to give more options in the future.

If you're not keen on Katherine, what about these names/variations:

Catriona
Cate
Karin
Kate
Katie
Kathleen
Kathy
Katrina
Krista
Kristina/Christina

Chloris33 · 10/07/2017 12:10

Kitty is a (lovely, IMO) shortening of Katherine, or related name. Not a name in own right. How about Katrina/Katrin/Katrine, and Kitty for short?

theresamustgo · 10/07/2017 12:12

I love Kitty - so sweet. I know a fiercely intellectual Kitty and like the contrast between name and attitude.
Kit would be fine if you can stand the KitKat nickname.

AppalazianWalzing · 10/07/2017 12:15

I know an adult, female Kit-apparently everyone always always thinks they've heard her wrong and her name is Kate. Something to consider.

GreenTulips · 10/07/2017 13:10

Not a name in own right

Yes it is

AnotherAnnoyingMother · 12/07/2017 21:35

Kit is nn for Christopher

grufallosfriend · 12/07/2017 22:33

Isn't kit used for sports kit? Have you got all your kit? Strange as a name imo

TurquoiseOwl · 15/07/2017 02:05

Kitty is better than Kit.
