Baby name dilemma

Would you have concerns about the name Ophelia because of the potential ' I feel ya' thing if your surname was friend? Or is it over thinking things and should just go with the name you love?

DS had an Ophelia in his class and i've never heard anything bad says about it.

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 06/07/2017 15:37

Pronounce it o-fell-ya and then it's not a worry.

PippaFawcett · 06/07/2017 15:38

Oh goodness, I love the name but never thought of 'I feel ya'. It does kind of ruin it a bit for me and I love it! Orla instead?

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2017 15:39

I would have big issues naming my child Ophelia, bearing in mind Shakespeare's character.......

newtlover · 06/07/2017 15:47

quite

MollyHuaCha · 06/07/2017 15:51

I like Ophelia very much. Smile

The pronunciation issue will depend on where you live. In my (standard English) accent Ophelia has four syllables and definitely begins with an 'O'.

In certain other accents the name may be said as three syllables and the 'O' might be more of a non-descript 'Uh'.

Personally I do not hear 'I feel ya' at all. I've only ever heard it mentioned on MN!

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2017 16:01

And you're not bothered by the whole going mad committing suicide thing?

Helenluvsrob · 06/07/2017 16:04

Many characters go mad / commit suicide 😂

As long as your surname isn't ramsbottom or similar go for it

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2017 16:07

Off the top of your head can you name me any famous Ophelias who haven't gone mad and committed suicide?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/07/2017 16:11

Ophelia Friend.

I wouldn't.

WowserBowser · 06/07/2017 16:15

It's a valid name. I doubt anyone is going to say 'after the character who committed suicide?' That kind of shit doesn't bother me. Like the name's meaning. 'Oh it means shit in Latin' Who cares!

I think it's a lovely name, Op.

ShutupanddriveM5 · 06/07/2017 16:18

I know a little girl called Ophelia (pn Oh-fee-lee-u) nn FiFi and as far as I'm aware she's never had any problems. I wouldn't think many children would think of that.
Would you not name your child Henry because he was a horrible man whore who was really fat and died? There are plenty of names that may remind someone of something but it's a pretty name and totally useable even with the Shakespeare link!

Choccyhobnob · 06/07/2017 16:25

Eeesh I'm not sure about Ophelia Friend, or Ophelia with any surname that is also an object. It's not horrendous though and probably wouldn't even invite the comments we think it might.

AuntieStella · 06/07/2017 16:29

Well, it's not as bad as if your surname were Cox.

But I do think it's risible enough to make me want to swerve it.

Could you use a different surname?

MammieBear · 06/07/2017 16:49

I you love it use it and keep surname Friend Ophelia Friend is Good name. Smile

MammieBear · 06/07/2017 16:50

If you love it use it! silly Phone!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 06/07/2017 17:02

Not with your surname.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 06/07/2017 17:28

Hmm...am divided on this:

On the one hand, Ophelia is a beautiful name (was good enough for Roald Dahl's daughter, too!), is now being used more, and I kind of think why not reclaim it from any stigma.

At the end of the day, Shakespeare's Ophelia was fictional, and MH/ suicide issues with a name aren't like the RL connotations a baby named, say, "Myra" in the UK might once have faced. (Or even still faces? Are there any under 50ish?).

On hearing a small girl's name "Ophelia Friend", I wouldn't have even made the connection with a-feel-o/ I-feel ya friend.
Having had it mentioned, though, I'm now thinking teen years might prove difficult.
Or not at all.

Cosima?
Raphaela/ Raphaella?

AutumnalLeaves38 · 06/07/2017 17:31

^ Or Cecilia?

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2017 17:33

"If you love it use it!"

Well, if you love it, change your own name to it. If you have doubts don't give it to someone else not in a position to object.

blue2014 · 06/07/2017 17:55

No, with your surname it just doesn't work. Sorry

Ohmyfuck · 06/07/2017 18:08

As your surname is Friend, I wouldn't do it. I really loved a name but because of similar circumstances I had to forego it too. So frustrating. :-(

ABCFamily · 06/07/2017 18:16

Love the name Ophelia, but we specifically ruled it out as it sounded rude with our surname.

I'd personally give Ophelia Friend a miss too. Sorry!

Popskipiekin · 06/07/2017 18:20

Little girl opposite is called Aurelie, Auri ("Orri") for short. Could you have Aurelia? Same kind of feel?

Jooni · 06/07/2017 19:16

Sorry, I don't think it works with your surname Sad

How about Octavia or Seraphina?
