Middle name for Sadhbh?

We've picked the name Sadhbh for our baby girl due in October, and I'm drawing a blank for middle names to "go" with it. It's pronounced Sive, rhymes with 5.

DH is extremely unimaginative with names, but certainly knows what he doesn't like Hmm.

She'll have a Ní surname, so I'd like to avoid another Irish name. The only name I loved was Sadhbh Martha Ní, but DH (incorrectly) thinks Martha is an old ladies name so has vetoed.

I'd like something solid and classic, especially between her first and surnames which won't be easy for a lot of people to spell and pronounce.

Grace?

Sadhbh Mary. Sorted.

Buntysoven · 06/07/2017 01:05

Oooh I love harriet's suggestion of Mary.

I think Jane is too short and plain. I think you need at least two syllables in a MN.

I know you weren't too keen on another Irish MN, but what about Sadhbh Eilis?
Sadhbh Aislinn?

Or mix your Celtic heritage -
Sadhbh Eirlys (Welsh for 'snowdrop')
Sadhbh Angharad (Welsh for 'beloved')
Sadhbh Eilidh (Scots Gaelic)

I like the MNs that start with a vowel from upthread.
I love Sadhbh Olivia.

Suggestions:
Sadhbh Evelyn/Evaline
Sadhbh Antonia
Sadhbh Angelika
Sadhbh Elsa
Sadhbh Isobel
Sadhbh Estelle
Sadhbh Ursula
Sadhbh Eleanore/Elinor
Sadhbg Eirene
Sadhbh Eloise

Not sure if this still happens but in my generation the priests wouldn't baptise the baby if it didn't have a saints name, so all my friends with Irish names are Aisling Mary and Siobhan Bernadette etc, so in my mind Sadhbh Mary or Sadhbh Frances or something just sounds right!

mathanxiety · 06/07/2017 20:26

Doesn't happen any more. Even when I was growing up there was a baby Clint Eastwood [surname] baptised in my parish.

HolyShmoly · 06/07/2017 20:39

I think a two syllable name would work well. Right now I can only think of Marie or Elaine which are fairly plain-jane. Sadhbh is such a gorgeous name.

harrietm87 · 06/07/2017 20:41

Wow - maybe it depends on the priest?! I'm 30 but guessing the Clint eastwood baby is older! All my cousins and friends my age with Irish first names have saints' middle names. Mostly Mary tbh.

chupsmelad · 06/07/2017 20:45

Ooh I do like Mary if you can't have Martha.

dinosaurkisses · 06/07/2017 21:00

Thanks everyone for your super helpful suggestions!

Funnily enough, Mary is a family name on my side- it's my own middle name- I just don't like it!

It's down to Sadhbh Jane or Sadhbh Bevan (after Nye Bevan.... We're massive lefties!)

HolyShmoly · 06/07/2017 21:46

Not to put you off Bevan, but if I saw Sadhbh Bevan Ni Shúilleabháin I would be confused how you managed to spell the first and last name in Irish and fell down at Beibhinn. But I'd never heard of Nye Bevan until your post. Blush
I've also just remembered how much I love the name Beibhinn.

chupsmelad · 06/07/2017 21:55

I'm used to Bevan being a (n uncool) boys' name where I'm from, but if you like it then go for it Smile

HolyShmoly · 06/07/2017 21:58

Having had a wee google of Beibhinn, it seems like one of the Beibhinn I know pronounces it very differently than the standard. Much flatter than the correct pronunciation.

There are thousands of saints to choose from even if a priest thinks he is following some sort of rule about names.
Berengaria
Natalia
Alexandrina Maria da Costa
Frances Xavier Cabrini (I knew a Cabrini in school)
Ingrid
Jane Frances de Chantal (I knew a Chantal in university)
Carissima
Lelia
Dairirce
Edith (Stein)
Seraphina
Tabitha
Matilda
Ursulina
Morwenna
Petronilla

etc...
