Baby boy names too out there?

englishgirlnyc · 30/06/2017 15:12

I'm almost due with my first boy and finding names very hard! DH and I like a few, but I'm wondering if they are just too out there? Our top 3:

Magnus
Franklin
Crosby

Also on our list are some "safer" names which would probably go better with our quite common traditional English girls name for our dd:

Leo
Jesse
Dylan
Finn

Stuck! It was so easy the first time round!

Magnus and Franklin are nice, especially like Franklin.

Crosby is just weird, and sound very American-surnamey

MikeUniformMike · 30/06/2017 15:17

Magnus is great. Franklin is a bit American sounding. Crosby - No, it's a place not a baby.
Leo - great. Jesse - a bit wild west or cissy. Dylan - I really don't like this name unless for a 50 yr old Welshman. Finn - lovely but popular.

Basically, Magnus, Leo or Finn are all fine.

DrablittleCrab · 30/06/2017 15:19

I know a Franklin so it doesn't seem odd to me but I LOVE Jesse for a boy.

HRHQueenMe · 30/06/2017 15:19

I have a Magnus. Best name ever. Easy to pronounce and unusual enough to be unique and special.

Lucked · 30/06/2017 15:20

I love Magnus if DC 2 had been about we would have used it.

englishgirlnyc · 30/06/2017 15:20

Ha I didn't realise Crosby was a place! I do live in America and think I've been influenced by the last names as first names trend Wink

Crosby is awful. And far too similar to Cosby as in Bill the sex offender Cosby.

Magnus and Fanklin are both nice, unusual, but not unheard of. I prefer Franklin and you/he will have the option of Frank or Frankie as a more mainstream nn if Franlin does prove to be too 'out there'.

I also like Fin, Dylan and Leo. All great names imo.

Not keen on Jesse for a boy (but still a million times better than Crosby!).

DramaAlpaca · 30/06/2017 15:25

I love Magnus from your first list, and I like all of them in your 'safer' list.

I'm not keen on Franklin and I don't like Crosby at all.

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 30/06/2017 15:32

Crosby is a beach area near Liverpool.
It's nice enough as a name.
Magnus is ok, but it reminds me of cider!
I quite like Marcus. Quite unusual and similar to Magnus?
Franklin would get shortened to Frank or frankie. Sounds American, which is fine if you want an American name. I think it's a name that would last in to adulthood.

Leo is popular around here.
At least one per school class.
Leon, Liam and len are not as popular

Jesse I like. We seem to have passed the stage of hundreds of little Jessicas being shortened to jess.
Dylan is a solid, traditional name (north wales)
Dylan Thomas.
Bob Dylan.
I like Finn. Know one. Lovely lad.
Know a few Finley /finlays too.
And there are 2 Finns starting in dds reception class next term.

From your list, I would pick Franklin or Finn.

Mothervulva · 30/06/2017 15:46

Magnus.

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/06/2017 15:54

I like Magnus. Franklin is ok. Crosby is awful

Leo is nice. I know a 3 year old Leo
Like Jesse. I know a 1 year old
I like Dillon - this spelling though. Youngest I know is 10
Finn is nice but I don't like any full names for it other than maybe Phineas

I think just avoid Crosby

SasBel · 30/06/2017 16:08

Magnus, not Crosby.
What ever you choose will simply become his name.
Good luck.

leighdinglady · 30/06/2017 16:26

Not Crosby! Especially not with sex pest Bill in the news. People will think it's some form of tribute!

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2017 16:30

He's a Cosby though. But I agree that Crosby is the worst on your list.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2017 16:30

Finn is nice but I don't like any full names for it

It is a full name!

10storeylovesong · 30/06/2017 16:32

I'm due ds2 in October and we've decided on Dylan for him, so obviously I'd vote for that.

Swearwolf · 30/06/2017 16:34

I have a Franklin! He's 4 now and we've never met another one. I like that he has options (as others have said, he gets called Frank or frankie, but usually is just Franklin) and I like that it's an unusual name but follows a similar style to some of the more popular names - so it doesn't sound weird among all the Austin, Harrison type names, and all the Freddie, Alfie type names. People recognise it as a name, but it's still more unusual, if you see what I mean.

Mothervulva · 30/06/2017 16:35

I thought Crosby was too reminiscent of Cosby.

n0ne · 30/06/2017 16:52

Love Magnus. Unfortunately DH vetoed it for this baby.

NuffSaidSam · 30/06/2017 19:10

At a push you could have Fin (or Flin) as a nickname/shorter version of Franklin and have two for the price of one.

daisypond · 30/06/2017 19:23

Magnus is great - it's not too far out there. Otherwise, Leo and Dylan.

PhuntSox · 30/06/2017 19:51

Magnus and Franklin are great names.

Hector
Conrad
Lachlan
Murgo
Vitas
Harris

TeachesOfPeaches · 30/06/2017 19:54

My 18m old is Magnus and he is big and strong for his age with blond hair and bright blue eyes. Suits him perfectly Grin

noodlebum · 30/06/2017 19:56

I like Franklin and all your safe names :)

Sophronia · 30/06/2017 20:09

I love Magnus!
