Moses or Solomon

Hi

Unfortunately my husband and I just don't like any boys' names! We're so fussy (too posh, too unusual, too common) but need one any day now

We both quite like Moses and Solomon, despite being put off by how obviously biblical they are!

Which would you choose? Or do you have any other good suggestions?

Probable middle name of Daniel (after a particular Daniel we've known)

Thanks!

I have a friend called Moses and he is lovely so I am a fan of the name. I think it has a nice sound too.

BertrandRussell · 29/06/2017 20:00

Are you Jewish?

TeachesOfPeaches · 29/06/2017 20:02

I LOVE the name Moses and I'm not religious at all. Solomon is also a strong name

summerbaby2017 · 29/06/2017 20:06

I prefer Solomon. I like Luke too. Does it have to be s biblical name? What about Zack/Zackary?

We are struggling with middle name to go with our daughters first name Sloane, any suggestions welcome? I think it needs a feminine sounding name to balance it...

aroha77 · 29/06/2017 20:07

No, I'm not Jewish

Thanks for all your opinions! I still like Moses the best but might try to get Solomon to grow on me more!!

I just don't think it's any more overly biblical than Noah which is so popular now...?

I prefer Solomon to Moses

Theveryhungrybutterfly · 29/06/2017 20:26

They're both mega biblical. I assumed from the thread title that you were very religious. Names like Noah have become so mainstream they have lost the religiousness but Moses and Solomon haven't. I worry that your child will have lots of assumptions made about him (and his parents) - and it sounds like you are worried about that kind of thing if you are fussy about names being "too posh/common"?

RingTailedLemurFan · 29/06/2017 20:28

Solomon out of the two.

Summer how about

Sloane Rebecca
Sloane Ophelia
Sloane Darcey
Sloane Jasmine

If you're thinking Hebrew/ Hebrew derived names, how about something a little more unusual like Lior ( pronounced Lee-or) ?

aroha77 · 29/06/2017 20:33

I'm Christian so I wouldn't worry about people assuming that about me...Although I'm not a right-wing/conservative Christian so maybe I would worry about it...?!

I love both names! Were both on my shortlist for DS (Rueben) and were on the shortlist again for DTs (both girls!). I also really like Sulamain with nickname Sully which is the Muslim version.

We are not a religious family at all, but I just seem to love biblical names. Similar names also on MTV shortlist were Gabriel, Elijah, Ezra and Saul.

SuperBeagle · 29/06/2017 20:36

Moses is really obviously Biblical. As in, those without a Christian upbringing will still recognise Moses. I'd avoid it.

Solomon is nowhere near as obvious. It's also infinitely nicer.

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 29/06/2017 20:36

I just think of Gwenyth Paltrow's son when I hear Moses. I love Solomon and great nickname potential. I know a toddler called Solly which is cute.

Sophronia · 29/06/2017 20:45

I like both, especially Solomon!

aroha77 · 29/06/2017 20:47

I have a daughter who's nn is Ol or Ollie...Maybe I should take that into consideration!!

FartnissEverbeans · 29/06/2017 21:04

Solomon is a really cool name

RingTailedLemurFan · 29/06/2017 22:04

Er, yeah OP I don't think you could have Sol and Ol, or Solly and Ollie?!

SuperBeagle · 29/06/2017 22:08

How about Saul?

SumAndSubstance · 29/06/2017 22:36

I just don't think it's any more overly biblical than Noah which is so popular now...?

The thing is though, the more popular a biblical name becomes, the less overtly religious it becomes somehow. Plus, Moses is the most important figure in the Old Testament. I agree Solomon is less overly religious for both reasons.

millifiori · 29/06/2017 22:42

I like Solomon. Love Sol/Solly.

Chippednailpolish · 29/06/2017 22:49

Love Solomon. It was on our shortlist but we ended up naming DS Zachariah instead. Still love the name if we ever have another.....

alltouchedout · 29/06/2017 22:52

I like Solomon. And Saul.

hophop333 · 29/06/2017 23:13

Isn't mo a way of saying 'morbidly obese'? For that reason I'd go with Solomon. If you separate Moses and Solomon then it reduces the religiousness, it's only because they are written here together that it makes it sound highly religious. If you went with Solomon I'd be just as likely assume you were African, I knew a few African's with that name.

Alternatives along the same vein;
Gabriel
Elijah

LaurieFairyCake · 29/06/2017 23:17

If you're black fine, no if you're white. I know 2 in my church with those names, both Nigerian. They're way more religious names than Noah.

Buntysoven · 29/06/2017 23:50

I don't think colour is an issue at all. What an odd comment.
