Hi...

Right, DD is 11 and starting secondary in September. She is a Joanna but normally goes by Jo at her primary school - her friends call her Joey and she prefers it so wants her teachers to call her that when she starts. She has this journal thing to fill in and they hand it in on year 7 first day and it's just stuff like "please call me" and whatever else.

She wants to spell it 'Joie' Confused Surely Joey is fine, even if she thinks it's the boys spelling??

It's her choice. I changed the spelling of my nickname about that age. It lasted until I was about 15.

If I saw that, I'd presume it was pronounced the French way, which would be...weird.

raspberryblush23 · 21/06/2017 23:00

Reminds me of DD's current buggy, but I quite like it actually. If it will help her feel more confident going to secondary then why not? You can always use her full name at home.

Not as weird as pronouncing Elle as Ellie. Joie is rather nice.

French word for joy, as in joie de vivre.

Completely different pronunciation to Joey!

CuntWagon · 21/06/2017 23:03

Bless her Smile all the girls did this when I was at school. I would have dotted the I with a heart too Grin

MacarenaFerreiro · 21/06/2017 23:07

Zshch-wa.

As in "joie de vivre".

Joey is fine.

PlymouthMaid1 · 21/06/2017 23:12

I quite like it but I think you should point out that nobody will be sure how to pronounce it as written so that she knows to explain it.

BadToTheBone · 21/06/2017 23:27

I'd pronounce that as Joy.

One of my best friends at school was Joie pro. Joey short for Joanna. Once you've heard it once you always say it correctly.
