Billy or Teddy?

(William or Theodore on BC)

He's here.

Not Billy or Teddy. But either of the reasonable full names would do.

Tinseleverywhere · 19/06/2017 16:43

I like both and the more grown up Bill and Ted versions.

villainousbroodmare · 19/06/2017 16:46

Like William and all variations. Ted fine but really don't like Teddy.

grufallosfriend · 19/06/2017 16:55

"Like William and all variations"

Well, I'm not so sure about Willy...

grufallosfriend · 19/06/2017 16:56

I prefer Theodore, nickname Theo.

I don't like Teddy, Billy, Willy, they're too cutesy imo.

villainousbroodmare · 19/06/2017 17:00

Yeah, actually, Willy is the obvious exception!

mintich · 19/06/2017 17:19

Theodore!

bonbonours · 19/06/2017 17:25

Not that it matter but I'd assume Teddy was short for Edward not Theodore. But both names are fine in that there is a grown up alternative nickname they can use as well as the full name. I can't imagine anyone actually using Theodore though.

hopsalong · 19/06/2017 19:51

Billy, I think, but Teddy if you're willing to call him Edward and not Theodore (which is v modish at moment -- I know three baby Theos born in last year, and surely that is usual abbreviation?)

Or, on similar lines, Bobby?

grufallosfriend · 20/06/2017 06:35

Billy and Teddy aren't the most nicknames imo I think William will be Will (probably not Willy) and Theodore Theo, so make sure you're happy with those too

Bodypumpaddict · 20/06/2017 06:38

Love Billy

howthelightgetsin · 20/06/2017 07:16

I love William (Billy for when little, Will when older)

insancerre · 20/06/2017 07:21

Are you talking proper names or nicknames
Teddy is a ridulous name for an adult to me

oohloolala · 20/06/2017 07:23

Billy definitely! I love it and would have chosen it for DS if it didn't sound ridiculous with our surname

grufallosfriend · 20/06/2017 11:50

Wouldn't a Billy become a Bill?

SwimmingCostume · 20/06/2017 12:47

@insancerre did you even read the Op?

@grufallosfriend people wouldn't even know his BC names were William/Theodore. So when I go "he's Billy/Teddy" no one would change that to Will/Theo. I don't care if he changes when older but when little that's how it would be.

William

Teddy is fine but I think it's very faddy at the moment. There's going to be tons of Teds around his age and then it'll drop out of favour next year.

Muumi3 · 20/06/2017 14:15

What will the middle name be? We can see which flows better

Without knowing, I prefer William/Billy

insancerre · 20/06/2017 15:18

I did read your op, yes
If you give your child a nickname from birth then they will forever be called that name
People don't just stop when the child reaches adulthood
I have a cousin who is called Boo as a nickname and he still gets called it now and he is in his 50s

Tinseleverywhere · 20/06/2017 17:04

Ted or Teddy is a well known shortening for Theodore. A well known example being President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt who the Teddy Bear was originally named after.

Pemba · 20/06/2017 17:27

Theodore as it's more unusual than William, which is nice but maybe a bit dull? Teddy is cute for a little boy, then he can become Ted or Theo (nicer) when he's old enough.

sonlypuppyfat · 20/06/2017 18:36

I can't imagine any grown man wanting to be called Teddy

whyohwhy100 · 20/06/2017 18:38

@sonlypuppyfat lots do

BatFacedGirl · 20/06/2017 19:43

Sonly - my son is called Teddy and, like all names, people 'become them.' Its just who he is and he loves his name. I call him Teddy and Ted and his preference is for Teddy - if asked, that's what he'll give as his name.

He's never had a single negative comment at school, not even the obvious 'are you a teddy bear?'

Criticism doesn't bother me though because A I know it's not everyone's cup of tea and B I love it so much that nothing could put me off it

Obviouspretzel · 20/06/2017 21:38

Don't recall any men laughing at Teddy Sheringham for his name? I think Teddy is an acceptable name for an adult. It's not for everyone but it's hardly ridiculous.
