Overheard name in supermarket yesterday and thought it was unusual but pretty? Thoughts?

Awful

StayGoldPonyBoy · 13/06/2017 23:14

Sloane Peters from Ferris Bueller springs to mind! Might have been me you overheard, it's the name of one of DDs goldfish! GrinGrin I don't hate it but I don't think I'd use it for a human baby.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 13/06/2017 23:16

Are you American?

Pemba · 13/06/2017 23:19

About as far from 'pretty' as a name can get. I dislike surnames used for first names anyway, and this is one of the ugliest, especially for a girl.

mamalovesmojitos · 13/06/2017 23:21

Sloane Ranger. I wouldn't!

FinnegansCake · 13/06/2017 23:23

Don't do it if your surname is Grainger Grin
In fact, don't do it whatever your surname.

StarHeartDiamond · 13/06/2017 23:24

It is absolutely terrible. How about... Brick. Or Cushion. Or Retro. Or Market.

Seriously... Sloane?? Seriously?

Chloris33 · 14/06/2017 07:01

It's more popular in the U.S.A. I think of it as quite an American name. Personally I don't find it a pretty name, but tastes differ!

eurochick · 14/06/2017 07:25

I know one (adult male). I don't like it.

Littlereddevil3 · 14/06/2017 07:38

She'd be born wearing a velvet headband and a tweed jacket.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 14/06/2017 07:45

I know one - a nice girl, in her early 30s, British, middle class. However combined with a relatively uncommon surname she does have to spell her name for people quite often.

I think it is quite pretty with a strong edge and definitely preferable to all the Lily Lili May Mae Rose Grace Pixie Ava Evie Ellie current tedium.

disneykid · 14/06/2017 07:47
Confused
MacarenaFerreiro · 14/06/2017 07:53

God no. Very "straight out of a Disney kids TV show" or Sloane Ranger.

SuperBeagle · 14/06/2017 09:50

Sloane is frigging hideous.

Also sounds masculine.

Joeybee · 14/06/2017 10:20

I think it's a really cool, unusual name...but not too out there. It reminds me of Sloane Square in London, which is a pretty trendy place.

Sophronia · 14/06/2017 11:04

Sloane Ranger! Awful.

AuntieStella · 14/06/2017 11:15

I'm not a fan of surname names generally - Sloane Square was named for Hans Sloane.

And with the added resonance of Sloane Ranger, I really don't think this one works.

florascotianew · 14/06/2017 11:20

If you name a baby Sloane, at least some people will assume that you agree with these sort of social attitudes:

SoupDragon · 14/06/2017 11:21

Pretty?? Confused

RoseVase2010 · 14/06/2017 11:36

Sloane Grainger 😂😂😂😂

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/06/2017 11:44

Love it, very American/Canadian but gorgeous!

Alittlepotofrosie · 14/06/2017 16:29

Awful. Absolutely awful.

SPenfj · 14/06/2017 16:31

Dreadful.

Ferris Beuller of course, a classic movie which could redeem Sloane but doesnt.

Reminds me of Sloth and Slow

chinlop · 14/06/2017 18:04

I don't associate it with anything, but it just sounds like an ugly word to me.

StarHeartDiamond · 14/06/2017 18:07

Slug crossed with Loner. Or a modern-day Joan. Can't help the word association!
