Stephenson or Williamson?

We don't think double-barrelling is a good idea: they end in the same sound and are both long! We each think our surname is the best Wink which do you prefer?

Well the names mean son of Steven and Son of William.

There's nothing in it IMO, so maybe if baby is a girl you go with mothers name or if it's a boy you go with fathers name?

IndianaMoleWoman · 12/06/2017 20:06

Noah Stevens-Williamson or
Noah Williams-Stevenson.

ColourfulOrangex · 12/06/2017 20:08

Noah Williamson goes better I think

Lemonnaise · 12/06/2017 20:09

I don't think Reuben works with StephensonBlushsorry, too many nnns.

Or maybe I'm wrong, could just be me.

Noah William Stephenson sounds good to me.

21Dukeee · 12/06/2017 20:47

@MimiSunshine that's one thing I do agree with. Stephen and Stephanie as middle names.

Tattybogle89 · 12/06/2017 20:55

I'm confused why would the baby not have the fathers surname?

chinlop · 12/06/2017 20:58

The -wah ending of Noah does not sound right with the immediate Wi- sound of Williamson, in my opinion. Noah Stephenson sounds MUCH better.

Also think two middle names is fine.

Iamcheeseman · 12/06/2017 21:01

tatty really? It's 2017 ffs.

I prefer noah Stephenson best

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2017 21:08

Williamson won't have any (many?) spelling issues. Do you ever have problems with Stephenson/Stevenson OP?

!

Tattybogle89 · 12/06/2017 21:17

No need to be rude cheeseman.. Was a genuine question. I didnt think people chose babies surname based on what sounded better. Not being unkind just unusual to my ear when parents are together

21Dukeee · 12/06/2017 21:37

@Tattybogle89 because I don't see why his surname is more important. I'm really not into this whole 'tradition' thing. Neither is my partner. We think it's best to double-barrel if possible, but if not, the one that's the nicest/best Smile

If 2 middle names is no good, we would rather keep Reuben. It's very important to us.

Noah Stephenson sounds better. Absolutely no reason why your DS shouldn't have your name or his - I also don't go down the tradition route. I gave my DD my name, was nicer than DP's. 2 middle names is fine, they're not going to use them all the time anyway, just for official purposes.

chipscheeseandgravy · 12/06/2017 21:45

Oh god, I thought you wanted these as first names Confused

elQuintoConyo · 12/06/2017 22:21

My sister has two middle names, I have just the one not bitter we are children from 1972/74. It's hardly a new concept.

Noah Stephenson rolls off the tongue.

Noah Williamson peters into Edward Woodward territory (actor, was in The Equaliser tv series in the 70s and the original film of The Wicker Man). If you take all the Ds out of his name you're left with Ewar Woowar.

'nowawilliamson' too many Ws. Sounds inelegant.

Apologies to your DH Grin

troodiedoo · 12/06/2017 22:24

They both sound very distinguished names. I'm glad this thread is about actual surnames. I was going to say that this surname as first name thing is getting out of hand.

DaisyFranceLynch · 12/06/2017 22:26

I like Noah Reuben William Stephenson. Nothing wrong with two middle names, especially if both names are important to you (and it stops the "wah" sound of Noah running into the "wi" of William).

indigox · 12/06/2017 22:26

Williamson.

Sophronia · 13/06/2017 00:27

Noah Stephenson

Chickenagain · 13/06/2017 10:22

I prefer the Stephenson. My maiden name was Wilson and I always had to spell it out to name-takers on the phone! Me : "WiLson", NT : "How you spelling that?", Me : "W I L S O N", NT "Oh, WiWson" Hmm Couldnt stand it!!

blahthisistoohard · 13/06/2017 11:09

I would use Williamson, if there's no particular reason not to use the Dads name I really don't see why you wouldn't. You might not like to follow tradition but the fact is that it is tradition, so your son will be forever explaining that his Dad is his real Dad etc etc.

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 13/06/2017 11:15

When we got engaged I changed my surname to dh first name.
Ds has dh first name as his surname!
I haven't taken dh surname just kept his first name!!

SouthChinaMorningPost · 13/06/2017 11:19

Noah Stephenson is Mike's better, too much w!w!ww! Going on otherwise

21Dukeee · 13/06/2017 11:23

@blahthisistoohard it's the 21st century. I'm not going to follow any 'tradition' and all it does is encourage it when you do.

viques · 13/06/2017 11:25

Noah Reuben William Stephenson is a great name. you can imagine a returning officer intoning it as he wins his first parliamentary seat.( best bit of an election IMO hearing the middle names, or indeed the first names that they have chosen to drop, or those who are 'known as' other names, sorry I digress)

squoosh · 13/06/2017 12:46

You might not like to follow tradition but the fact is that it is tradition

Rubbish reason.
