Just that please Smile baby girl is due next month and it's the only name with both agree on, but the only thing holding us back is would this spelling be too difficult? We live in London.

It's a very pretty name. People will get used to the spelling and pronunciation.

Don't listen to anyone telling you to change the spelling, there's nothing wrong at all with using a name from your own culture.

BandeauSally · 11/06/2017 18:08

Lovely! Spell it how you like. It's 2017, the Uk can cope with "forrin" names by now and anyone who can't? Well that's their issue to deal with.

FreeNiki · 11/06/2017 18:10

Op can you post that name in cyrillic letters so I can see how it is meant to be pronounced. (I'll be able to read it).

teapotter · 11/06/2017 18:13

It's a hard one because unfortunately it does look like a trendy spelling of Michaela. I would say if baby will have an obviously Ukrainian/non British surname then it's absolutely fine. Otherwise unfortunately people may judge her if her name is mykhaila Jones.

Sophronia · 11/06/2017 18:14

It's nice. I'd keep the Ukrainian spelling.

disastrousflapjack · 11/06/2017 18:23

I don't think people will have a problem knowing how to pronounce it though I'm sure DD will be asked how it's spelled. But then I get asked how my name is spelled as I guess Sarah could be with or without an H. If it's spelling that is usual in the Ukraine and you want to use it, I'd not change it to Michaela as I'm sure she will STILL be asked how it's spelled.

BabyGirlBear · 11/06/2017 18:25

@FreeNiki Михайла Smile

It's fine if you're Ukrainian. To be honest people would think you were an arse if you used that spelling and you were native born white British. Will she have a Ukrainian surname? If so go for it.

Tinseleverywhere · 11/06/2017 18:41

I would use it as it is a nice link to her Ukrainian roots without being too unusual for British people.

FreeNiki · 11/06/2017 19:08

Thanks OP!

I dont think the spelling matters so much as no spelling in English characters is going to match how it is meant to be pronounced in your native language.

Beautiful name though.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 11/06/2017 21:45

I did Russian at schoolBlush and the way you spell it in English looks the closest to the Cyrillic letters.

FreeNiki · 11/06/2017 21:50

I did Russian at school too.

The beginning though: people may say My but it's Mee at the beginning.

X is not really a K sound but a gutteral H like the ch in Loch.

Mi would be a better bet at the beginning.

BabyGirlBear · 11/06/2017 21:53

The thing is, I know 2 Mykhailas, back in Ukraine, so I would feel odd going for a different spelling. I think Mykhaila is most know for my heritage.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 11/06/2017 21:54

I thought kh sounded good. Yes to ee rather than i as would the I look like michael? I agree with x sounding more like loch, but will it be pronounced like that by English speakers? So complicated.

FreeNiki · 11/06/2017 21:58

English speakers will never say it right. Our own version of Michaela is Mi so not a problem it looks like Michael.

It doesn't matter how it's spelled as unless a native speaker it wont be quite right.

Just use the spelling you're happy with OP.

lorelairoryemily · 11/06/2017 22:26

I like it! I have a very simple, normal name and no one ever spells it properly, and those who do call me a different version of itAngry I wouldn't worry what other people think, it's not unusual to have to spell your name for someone or help them pronounce it

ShinyGirl · 11/06/2017 22:29

I like it. It looks much prettier than Michaela

Buntysoven · 12/06/2017 00:58

It's great. If us ignorant English think it looks made up shame on us!

notangelinajolie · 12/06/2017 01:11

Um I don't see why living in London would make any difference to how you spell it? It's a pretty name and a pretty way of spelling it. If you are from Ukraine and that is how you would spell it in Ukraine then that is how you should spell it. Congratulations Flowers

VoteMe · 12/06/2017 02:20

It's a lovely name and you should keep the spelling.

You may need to correct how its pronounced occasionally but it's not at all tricky. I have a name that's foreign and trickier to sound out - people say it wrong quite often but I don't mind in the slightest.

MikeUniformMike · 12/06/2017 18:54

Just ran it through go ogle translate and it's not the same as Michaela (pron. Mick Ayla). It's more like Mukh-i-la (kh like the "ch" in Scottish loch).
It's pretty in the Kyrillic and English, and sounds pretty.
